Term 1: Week 4

Maths:

This week we learned about ‘Frisky five’, ‘Snappy six’ & ‘Spotty seven’. We read each of the Number zoo stories, discussed how to represent the numbers, learned the formations, looked at each Numberblock and discussed what numbers come before/after. We then made a craft for each number which linked to the Number zoo animal. We had a lot of fun using paint and bubble wrap.

We continued 2D shape this week, focusing on squares and rectangles. We spoke about the sides and corners of these shapes and how a square has all the same length of side whereas a rectangle has two different lengths. We looked around the room to find both shapes. We then used triangles, circles, squares and rectangles to make our own ‘2D shape pizzas.’ We counted the total amount of each shapes we used and had lots of fun putting all the toppings on our pizzas!

Drawing club:

This week we did ‘Hamilton’s Hats’. We drew Hamilton and some of the animals he met. Some of us designed our own Hamilton hat too!

Rhyme & Phonics:

We read lots of rhyming stories this week – ‘Tabby McTat’, ‘The Gruffalo’ & ‘Aliens love underpants’. We continues playing lots of rhyming games which we did excellently on! Our song of the week was ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’.

We begun learning about the first 3 phonemes this week – s, a & t. We ‘stamped the stamps on the s’, ‘coloured the apples for a’ and did a hunt for the ‘t’ sounds. Each day we looked through the Feely bag to see what objects begun with the sound. We then listened to the Jolly Phonics story and song and learned the action for the sound too. We all practiced the formation for each letter in sand and on the LCD boards.

In the tuff tray we had ‘stamping for s’, ‘animals printing for a’ & ‘tap tap boards for t’.

Big Question:

Our big question this week was ‘what animals live in cold places?’. We looked at different animals and discussed what kind of habitats and weather conditions they live in. We loved playing in the ice cream shop this week and learned lots about how to be a shopkeeper and a customer. We worked with money and practiced good manners and positive interactions.

Mrs Peterson (play support worker) set up a hot/cold science experiment station where we could make tea/coffee. We observed what the differences were when we added hot vs cold water to tea bags. We noticed the smell, strength and colour of the tea was different depending on if the water was hot or cold.

Play Project:

Our play project this week was ‘ice cream’. We made a range of things for this, including – ice cream pictures, ice lollies and ice cream cones.

Play:

We were busy playing in the classroom and open area this week. Some favourites were – junk modelling, the ice cream shop and the magnatiles.

Extras:

We had music with Mrs Peterson on Tuesday, PE with Mr Williamson on Wednesday & Friday, a visit to the library on Thursday and trips up to ‘the trees’ on Wednesday and Friday. Roald Dahl day was on Friday and we had 3 peerie Matilda’s in our class. We painted George’s Marvellous medicine bottles to make our own potions.

It was a busy week! Our learning log for this week is pictured at the bottom 🙂

We sorted frozen vegetables to find the Runaway peas. We also created our own ice cream pictures to be displayed in our ‘Ice cream shop’ role play area next week.
