N4/N5 Business Management

This course can be chosen in S3, S4, S5 and S6.

At N4 level, there will be no formal exam. There will be 2 units to complete in class and an assignment to do which is set by SQA and conducted in school under a high degree of supervision.

At N5 level, the course assessment has two components.

  • Question paper (90 marks)         2 hours
  • Assignment (30 marks)                 5 hours

The Assignment is worth 25% of overall mark which has to be completed during class time and sent to the SQA in March. The assignment requires pupils to research and analyse information, and produce a business report using given headings. The report is based on the evidence of the research findings and should detail appropriate conclusions and/or recommendations. The final report should be no longer than 1,300 words (excluding appendices). The exam consists of a question paper which is 75% of the overall grade.

Aims of the Course

  • Pupils will develop knowledge and understanding of the ways in which society relies on business to satisfy needs and wants
  • The class will get an insight into the systems organisations use to ensure customers’ needs are met
  • Pupils will learn about enterprising skills and attributes
  • This course will include financial awareness, in a business context
  • It will give pupils an insight into how organisations arrange their resources for maximum efficiency and to improve their overall performance
  • This course will show an awareness of how external influences impact on organisations.

Homework Policy

There will be homework issued throughout the course. Pupils also have regular end of unit tests they must revise for.
