RSPB Bird watching at Millennium bridge
On Friday the 26th of May we went to the Millennium bridge in Doonfoot to see what birds we could spot. We got to look through a telescope at the birds and ask the RSPB volunteers questions we had. We also learned about how to become a volunteer for the RSPB.
Visit from Pieroni’s
We were lucky to have two ladies from the Pieroni’s fishmongers visit us on Wednesday the 24th of May. The showed us lots of different fish that come from our sea and two lobsters that were alive and wriggling about. We all got to touch the fish and the lobsters. The fish were cold and slimy. The ladies are coming back to visit us again soon and let us try some cooked fish.
Carnegie Library Visit
On Tuesday 23rd of May we walked to the Carnegie Library to hear some seashore themed books and to read books we chose from the bookshelves. We loved listening to the different stories and looking at all the books the library has.
Trip to Culzean
On Monday 22nd May we went on a class trip to Culzean Country park to learn all about our local wildlife in ponds and about the seaside as part of our Big Splash Fortnight. We had lots of fun fishing in the pond to see what creatures we could catch and learning about them from the Rangers. After we had lunch we went down the beach to scavenger for different things like driftwood, black stone, sea glass, and one group even found a mouse hiding under a rock. We learned lots of interesting facts about our beaches and about how to become a ranger at Culzean.
Venn Diagrams
Primary 2 have had lots of fun this week learning about Venn diagrams.
Measuring Volume
We have started our new topic in maths: Volume and had lots of fun measuring water using different measuring jugs and cylinders. Have a go at measuring liquids with your child at home this week.
Numeracy Games
Static Electricity
This week we began to learn about electricity and how to be safe around it. We carried out experiments with balloons and different types of paper to see if we could create static electricity. We rubbed the balloons with our jumpers then held it above different types of cut paper and were amazed to see the lighter types of paper jump onto our balloon. When we wet the balloon with water it got rid of the static electricity and the paper didn’t jump onto it. Next week we are going to be making electrical circuits.
Teddy in the Park – Part 1
We read a story about two teddies who packed their rucksacks and set off on an trip to stay in the woods. But on their way it started to rain and all the arrows that were guiding them washed away.
“The problem was that the signs washed away
They weren’t much good on a wet, rainy day!
What could we use to make a good sign?
One that would be useful come rain or shine…”
So we had to do an experiment to see what would make the best arrows and we decided that the chalk marker was the best because it was easy to see and the rain didn’t wash it all away.
STEM
We have started our STEM topic this week and are currently focusing on engineering. A civil engineer from KCP Environmental visited us and told us all about engineering and what she does. We had the chance to ask her lots of questions. Now we are busy thinking about problems that we can solve by inventing something. Lots of us want to invent something that helps us tidy our rooms.
Money, Money, Money
Planting Herbs and Vegetables
As part of our Katie Morag topic we planted vegetables and herbs just like Katie Morag’s uncle does: Uncle Matthew. We know that vegetables are good for our bodies and that we can grow lots of different vegetables in Scotland. Today we planted chilli peppers, parsley, basil, watercress and sage. We have all taken our planted herbs/vegetables home and we are going to try to look after them. Children are encouraged to feedback to the class about how their plant is growing. We have also a selection of herbs and vegetable plants for the class to look after and watch grow.
Measuring Challenge
We have been busy learning about length and weight over the last two weeks. To recap our knowledge we worked in pairs to find and answer measure questions around the classroom. We had lots of fun.
Term 3 at a Glance
This term we will be learning our Scottish poem: ‘Sair Finger’ for our Burn’s competition and alongside this we will be learning about Scotland through our new topic: Katie Morag. With the start of British Science Week on the 10th of Match and our STEM week starting on the 13th of March we will be looking at a range of Science topics including Energy; Electricity; and the Sun and Moon. We will also be using a range of Technologies and looking at ways we can construct objects.
In Literacy we will be focusing on character and questioning using Bloom’s Buttons during our reading tasks. The Reading Challenge will return for February as part of a ‘I love books!’ month and there will be 2 winners. We will also be learning about wow words and creating leaflets in our writing tasks. Then during our STEM topic we will be creating and performing class talks about Scottish inventors and engineers to develop our listening and talking skills.
In Numeracy we will be measuring and weighing objects, revisiting addition and subtraction with a focus on mental strategies, using and counting money and fractions. In Big Maths we will be adding 2 and 3 to 1-digit numbers with speed, doubling and halving and using number lines to help us begin to calculate in our heads in different ways.
Welcome to our P2 Class Blog
Welcome!
I hope you all have had a fantastic start to the new year. With each new year comes fresh starts and Primary 2 will be making a start to our class blog this term. We will be sharing our learning; sharing links to educational games; and providing you with reminders and diary dates. Parents and pupils will also be able to comment on certain posts and ask each other questions on their learning or homework.
I hope you all find our class blog informative and useful.
