Heathfield Extended Learning Facility consists of 4 classes located throughout the school specifically designed for pupils with significant additional support needs.
Each class has 2 teachers and 1 school assistant supporting up to 10 pupils.  Pupils have access to a sensory room, 2 quiet rooms and an enclosed playground if required.

Aims

  1. To make provision for Primary aged pupils with significant Additional Support Needs who require a more structured, tailored environment than may usually be found in a mainstream class.
  2. To create a purposeful and meaningful curriculum based on Curriculum for Excellence, incorporating necessary sensory inputs, life and social skills that meets the needs of all learners.
  3. To provide pupils with opportunities to integrate with their peer group in both academic and social settings.
  4. To support pupils’ inclusion into mainstream classes where appropriate, on an individual and/or group basis.

The facility employs a multi-sensory approach, utilising equipment and techniques to enhance learning and engagement. Regular review meetings with parents, teachers, and support staff ensure the individualised learning is dynamic and responsive to each pupil’s evolving needs. A strong emphasis is placed on building self-esteem, regulation, and independence, fostering a sense of belonging and achievement within our supportive and stimulating learning community.
