History

Barrhill has many beautiful, old houses and Kildonan is one. Captain Wallace started to build Kildonan House before the First World War, however, it was not completed until after the war because the slates for the roof came from the Orkney Islands.

The house is built of Northumberland Sandstone which was brought here by train. It was then transported from the railway station by horse and cart. The house was built by many local tradesmen and the squash court is the first one built in Scotland.

The nuns of the Order of Saint Joseph of Cluny had Kildonan from 1946 until 1978 as a boarding school. Since then it has changed hands a number of times and is now in the hospitality business.
