It will be issued on a regular basis and will be varied, meaningful and interesting. Homework is generally given Monday – Thursday and the homework diary should be signed by the parents.

Literacy and English

The teacher sets reading activities for the children to complete with an adult at home.

Primary 1-3 Storyworlds

Primary 4-7 Literacy World/Novels

You can help by encouraging your child to read as much as possible and by discussing what has been read. Reading from different sources (including books, comics, magazines, internet) adds variety and interest. Visits to the library also help encourage the reading habit.

Children may be given phonic sounds to practise, a report to write, spelling to practise, some written language, a poem to learn, a talk to prepare or some topic research to carry out. You can help by discussing work given and by encouraging your child to work on their own, giving help where necessary.

Numeracy and Mathematics

Knowing multiplication tables is an essential part of maths and children are expected to have a sound knowledge of all tables. You can help by encouraging your child to practise tables and asking them mental calculations or playing games. Children can also see the relevance of mathematics if they are encouraged to handle and count money while out shopping, help plan routes for a journey, use timetables, help measure for home decorating, weigh food, etc. Children may be given written practice or activities to complete to reinforce work done in class.
