Health and Wellbeing

Health and Wellbeing is a core subject within the Curriculum for Excellence. Pupils at Thorn Primary School follow programmes which enable them to develop knowledge, understanding and skills which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future. As a result pupils will be able to:

  • make informed decisions in order to improve their mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing
  • experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves
  • apply their mental, emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle
  • make a successful move to the next stage of education or work
  • establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained into adult life, and which will help to promote the health and wellbeing of the next generation of Scottish children

At Thorn Primary  our pupils participate in Physical Education for 2 hours per week to allow them to  improve their level of fitness and participate in a wide range of activities. Pupils are also able to participate in a wide range of afterschool and lunchtime activities including football, basketball, lunchtime play clubs, baseball, running club, squash, netball and badminton. Our staff also use our outdoor space for regular learning opportunities.

All pupils are expected to bring a PE kit of shorts, T-shirt and sandshoes to school as necessary. Children are not allowed to wear jewellery of any type during P.E. All piercings must be removed or covered as a safety precaution. The school cannot accept responsibility for the safekeeping of jewellery and each child must look after his or her own property.
