Literacy and Languages

There are 3 main aspects to Literacy and English

Listening and Talking, Reading and Writing

Reading

In P1 – 3 classes use Story World/Big Cat as our reading scheme. There is a progressive programme of phonics based on ‘Jolly Phonics.’

In the middle and upper department, reading is supported through our Literacy World/Big Cat and use of class novels for reading .

We encourage our children and young people to read at home.

Each class has access at the early stages to a variety of additional reading materials to suit all abilities and we actively try to encourage recreational reading.

Writing

Within Thorn, we use the Talk for Writing approach to teach and assess writing skills.

All aspects of writing are developed throughout the school using a wide variety of opportunities and resources and are related to other areas of the curriculum.

Teachers aim to provide opportunities for within real life contexts through topics and mini projects.

Listening and Talking

Listening and talking skills are developed in many ways. Children are encouraged to talk and listen in a variety of situations, e.g.   listening to and respecting others’ opinions, expressing opinions,  listening for information, responding to texts, presenting information.

French

At Thorn Primary we teach French from Primary 1.
