Addition with Carrying

This video takes you through the various stages of adding in columns.  Please note that there are a variety of places that the ten can be placed when carrying.  We currently teach children to put it above the line.  In the first example of carrying a ten the teacher places it below the line – we would put it above in the box with the number 3.

Number Talks

Number Talks are short, daily exercises aimed at building number sense. Number sense is the ability to play with numbers meaning pupils can visualize problem solving, perform calculations quickly, and are flexible in their mathematical strategy. Here is an example of a number talk that children may be familiar with.
