Primary 4/5

Primary 4/5 Term 1

Primary 4/5 have had a wonderful start to the new school year.

Topic

Our social studies topic this term was Transport, with a particular focus on climate change. We compared old methods of transport to newer methods and looked at transport of the future.

We had a fun and informative day out at the Riverside museum where we took part in a workshop called “Powerful Stuff”. Here, we learned more about how different forms of transport are powered. It was great fun exploring the museum with our lab coats and clipboards and at the end, we created our own model vehicle – there were some very promising designs! We also went aboard the tall ship, the Glenlee to find out more about sailing boats of the past.

This topic has also provided many opportunities to explore STEM concepts. We made paper helicopters and made some very clever observations about how they moved as well as timing their journey to the ground. This led to some great questioning from the class about how they could adapt the basic helicopter design to make it even better!

We also investigated the forces that help rockets launch and travel into space. We even launched a water rocket in the playground. We were amazed and surprised to observe how fast it took off, as well as how high it went, we estimated it reached about 30 metres!

National Coding Week

P4/5 took part in National Coding week, completing a challenge where we had to create a space scene before coding a rocket to visit some planets – complete with rocket sound effects!

Maths Week Scotland

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking part in Maths Week Scotland, where P4/5 demonstrated they were able to apply their maths skills in lots of different ways! Some particular highlights were the Escape Room and the Maths Relay Challenge. However P4/5 are particularly proud of their achievement in the Sumdog Scotland Competition for Maths Week Scotland where our class came an amazing 54th out of 6,427 classes that entered – putting us in the top 1%!

We are currently reading…

We are loving our class novel, “The Nowhere Emporium” by Ross MacKenzie, a magical and thrilling story full of mystery! It was interesting to find out the author is from Renfrew and parts of the story are set in Glasgow.

Next term…

In term 2, we are looking forward to learning more about Space in our Science topic.

Our Class Assembly takes place on Friday 1st on November at 2:15pm, and we welcome parents and family to watch.  The theme for our class assembly is the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing, so be prepared for one small step for P4/5 but a giant leap for Langbank!
