Homework

Homework is an integral part of learning and teaching.  It provides children and young people with the opportunity to develop self-reliance, self-discipline, self-confidence and be responsible for their own learning.  It also strengthens the link between home and school by supporting parents and carers to share in the learning process.  Homework can take many forms and will reflect the age, stage and area of learning currently being undertaken by your child.  It will be issued on a regular basis and will be varied, meaningful and interesting.

Langbank Primary School has a homework policy based on Renfrewshire Council’s policy and guidance.

The children are given a reasonable amount of work to do at home. Parents should use the following times as a guide:

Primary 1 and 2 – 20 minutes

Primary 3 and 4 – 30 minutes maximum

Primary 5, 6 and 7 – 40 minutes maximum

Homework is given to encourage the children to develop good work habits and self-discipline in relation to completing a given piece of work. Homework often consists of work which has been taught in class and can be consolidated and reinforced at home. Children may also be asked to research information for topic work or from current affairs/news programmes.

All pupils have homework diaries, of slightly varying formats, to record homework given. We would encourage parents to check diaries regularly and sign the diary to indicate awareness/supervision of the children’s homework tasks.

Homework Hints

General advice includes:

  • Help your child to succeed by providing a quiet place to work.
  • Try to remember to sign markers and diaries etc.
  • Encourage both reading aloud and silently at home (from P1 to P7).
  • Remember to ask your child lots of questions as part of their reading.
  • Help your child to learn number facts and times tables regularly.
  • Remember that both written and unwritten homework is valuable
  • Ensure that homework is regularly completed and handed in on time.

The Learner’s Journey

In Langbank Primary high standards of learning and teaching are expected in every class. Children are encouraged to work to the best of their ability and take pride in their work.

We foster teamwork and encourage independent learning, including active, problem solving and collaborative approaches.

Children progress and achieve in different ways and at different rates. Through a wide variety of challenging activities children in Langbank Primary will have opportunities to experience a greater breadth and depth of understanding, enabling them to apply their skills and knowledge in different situations.

The progression levels are as outlined below. It is important to note a child may be working at different levels across the curricular areas.

Early Level – Pre- school years and P1 or later for some

First Level – to the end of P4, but earlier or later for some

Second Level – to the end of P7, but earlier or later for some

Third and fourth – S1 to S3, but earlier for some

The Fourth Level broadly equates to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level 4

Senior phase – S4 – S6 and college or other means of study

Assessment of children’s progress and achievements will be based on teachers’ assessment of their knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and capabilities, as described in the experiences and outcomes across the curriculum.

Children’s progress will be assessed across a breadth of learning and in different contexts. Their achievements will be monitored and recorded in order to track their progress through the curricular levels.
