Numeracy

Numeracy and Mathematics

Numeracy and Mathematics plays an important role in our lives and in the lives of our children. It is used in everyday activities such as buying food and clothes, keeping time and playing games. We use a wide range of resources including Heinemann and Teejay Maths.

Mental Agility is developed using the newly introduced ‘SEAL’ approach. Active maths activities and approaches are encouraged for all pupils. We have also introduced Number Talks across the school and have invested in more concrete materials to reinforce learning.

In addition to developing basic number skills, doing sums and learning tables, the children also do work on the measurement of length, area, volume, weight and time, as well as studying aspects of shape and pattern. Much of this work is of a practical nature.

Problem-solving activities are embedded throughout the numeracy and mathematics programme, and gives scope for the children to apply the basic facts learned to the solution of either real or imaginary problems. The class computers, calculators and iPad apps also widen our pupils’ mathematical horizons.
