Social Studies

In social studies children will develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances. Children will develop an understanding of democracy and citizenship, explore and evaluate different types of evidence, develop their understanding of the history, heritage and the culture of Scotland and appreciate its place within the world, support a greater understanding of how to influence events by learning about human activities in the past and present. Social studies is divided into 3 area:

  • People, past events and societies
  • People, place and environment
  • People, society, economy and business

At Howwood Primary pupil voice leads the planning in Social Studies. Children and young people choose the context for learning, share their thoughts on what and how they want to learn and steer the topic though interests which crop up along the way.

Social studies also includes teaching of the following concepts within a context: eco schools, global citizenship, world of work, enterprise and rights respecting schools.
