Parents and Teachers both play an important part in the Educational process.
The school itself offers a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. A variety of teaching methods are involved in this process and the
active involvement of the children in their own learning is greatly encouraged.

Literacy is defined within Curriculum for Excellence as:
‘the set of skills which allows an individual to engage fully in society and in learning, through the different forms of language, and the range of texts, which society values and finds useful.’
In Barsail Primary we plan learning activities not only in discrete lessons but across all curricular areas and in real life contexts, which help children develop a sense of health and well-being and improve their literacy and numeracy skills. Using a more active, co-operative and problem solving approach we promote the development of:

Mathematics plays an important role in our lives and in the lives of the children allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives. For pupils to use Maths effectively, our aim is to give our children a sound grounding in the basic number skills and the opportunity to develop Mathematical concepts through pupil activity in the area of: Problem Solving, Number, Money and Measurement, Information Handling and Shape, Position and Movement. |

A wide variety of teaching strategies are used when teaching mathematics across the school. These include a range of individual desk activities, mental maths games and puzzles and active learning games and challenges allowing children to both scaffold learning with peers and consolidate and develop breadth of knowledge.
Primary 2-5 also take part in Number Bond Challenges each month, challenging them to become quick and accurate with their number bonds. The winner gets a special number bond trophy to take home for the month.

Barsail Primary is committed to ensuring young people within the school feel happy, safe, respected and included within the school environment and that they have a variety of health and wellbeing learning experiences that help develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that will develop positive mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing both now and in the future. By doing so children will be prepared for both effective learning within the school and both independent learning and living in their future lives.
