Register your child for a free nursery or childcare place

It’s time to register for a free nursery or childcare place starting in August 2024.

You can apply for a place if your child:

– turns 3 on or before 28 February 2025

– turns 2 on or before 28 February 2025 and you were previously in care, or you get certain benefits, or the child is currently in care (such as kinship care).

Please apply by 31 January 2024.

Visit Renfrewshire Council’s website to apply online. You can download a form if you prefer or contact us for a paper form.

You can also find more information on what type of placement you can ask for and a list of all nurseries and childminders in the area.

REGISTRATION FOR SCHOOL – 2024/2025

Register your child for school between Wednesday 1 and Tuesday 7 November.

If your child will turn 5 between 1 March 2024 and 28 February 2025, you should register them for school.

If you, or someone you’re helping, can’t register online, you can contact your local primary school and make an appointment to register in person during the registration dates.

To register your child to go to another school outside of your catchment area, you’ll need to register them at a school within your catchment area first, then make a placing request.

If you can’t register your child for school till after Tuesday 7 November, please contact your local primary school directly.

Children who will be 4 when school starts in August 2024 can be deferred and get an additional year of free nursery and childcare. Please talk to your child’s nursery or childminder.

Search ‘apply for a place at school’ on Renfrewshire Council’s website for all of the above.

Free school meal payments – Easter break 2023

By Friday 31 March, we will make a payment to parents and carers of children and young people attending primary or secondary school and who qualify for free school meals based on family circumstances.
£27.00 per child will be put into bank accounts to cover the 2 week Easter holiday and 2 previous strike days.
Payments are only made to families who qualify (are on certain benefits) and who have already applied for free school meals for this school year (August 2022 to June 2023).
Children in primary classes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all entitled to a school meal regardless of their circumstances. That means parents with children in these classes will only receive a payment if:
• the child’s family qualify based on their circumstances (are on certain benefits)
• the parent has already applied for free school meals for this school year (August 2022 to June 2023).
If you’ve already applied, please don’t apply again. You will receive your payment automatically.
Since 14 November 2022, all families with children or teenagers aged under 16 can apply for the Scottish Child Payment—delivered by Scottish Government—if they met the criteria. This means the bridging payments that were part of the previous school breaks payments are no longer being paid through councils.
We encourage everyone to check if they meet the criteria and apply for the Scottish Child Payment and any other benefits by going to the Social Security Scotland website.
If you can’t apply for any of these benefits or are struggling to pay bills or have money worries, you can also speak to our helpful Advice Works team who can give you free and confidential help and support.
Search ‘Advice Works’ on our website.

Gaelic Parent and Carer meeting

Interested in your child learning entirely in Gaelic when they go to primary school?

There’s an online information session for parents and carers to find out more on Wednesday 29 March at 6.30pm.

Children learning through Gaelic receive their normal lessons but instead of speaking, writing and reading in English, they do this in Scottish Gaelic. This is known as Gaelic Medium Education and means the classroom is fully immersive in the language. Gaelic Medium Education is offered within our existing Gaelic provision at West Primary School.

Anyone in Renfrewshire can choose to register their child to learn through Gaelic at West Primary from Primary 1 onwards. You don’t need to live nearby the school to attend.

At the meeting, Jennifer McHarrie from Bòrd na Gàidhlig (the public body responsible for promoting Gaelic development across Scotland) will be there to give an overview of what parents and carers can expect from Gaelic Medium Education and answer any questions.

You need to register to attend on the eventbrite website.
