Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week 2022

Last week, we celebrated Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week by hosting drop in football sessions for P5-7.

The aim was to encourage more girls into sport and physical activity, raise awareness of those regularly taking part at all levels, and address the barriers that lead to lower activity rates among girls.

The events were very well attended with lots of fun games over lunchtimes. We then had pupils represent the school at the Girls Football Festival on the Friday.

Despite some rain, we had a fantastic time and played some excellent football. Well done!

Playmaker and Bikeability level 1 Award

Congratulations to our Primary 6’s who have taken another step in their leadership development by completing their Sports Leaders Playmaker Award and also their Bikeability Level 1 Award.

The Playmaker Award means that the children can now plan, organise and deliver fun games for younger pupils whilst the Bikeability Level 1 award confirms that the pupils can use their bike control skills in traffic-free environments.

We look forward to seeing you all use these skills when you return in Primary 7.

Thank you to Fraser, our Active Schools Coordinator who assisted with our Playmaker award.

Iris Anderson Competition

Iris Anderson Competition

The P7’s competed in the Iris Anderson competition this term. This is an award in memory of our former teacher, Iris Anderson, who had a passion for Physical Activity. This award has been in the school for many years and has the names of many former pupils engraved on the side.

Throughout the term, the classes completed the bleep test, 30 metre sprint, long jump and javelin to see who the respective champions would be.

We look forward to awarding the top two pupils the trophies at the end of year assembly.

The Cycling Friendly Award

We’re very pleased to announce that we’ve been awarded by Cycling Scotland, the nation’s cycling organisation, for our commitment to make it easier for more people to cycle. The Cycling Friendly School award recognises schools across Scotland for their commitment to making it easier for more people to enjoy the benefits of cycling.

To achieve the award, we’ve had our bike and scooter rails installed, participated in the Big Walk and Wheel, showed a commitment to active transport throughout the year, participated in the Mrs Ferguson Cycling Shield and delivered BikeAbility Level 1 and 2 training sessions.

Well done for your commitment in making our school a healthy and active one.

P6/7 Football Team

Some of the pupils who have attended our Football Breakfast Club had the opportunity to visit Dargavel Primary today for a bounce game.

It was great to see some of our friends in the nice weather.

The game was played in good spirit with some lovely passing football and great goals.

Thank you to Dargavel for inviting us down and we hope to see you again soon.

Sports Day 2022

The two-year wait was worth it! It was great to bring our Bishopton family together again to celebrate one of the biggest events in the school calendar – Sports Day!

We look forward to finding our the winning house later this week!

Sports Day 2022

We are all looking forward to tomorrow as we host Sports Day 2022.

There will be a spectating area for our family and friends at the pitch area of the field. We will not be able to offer seating, but you may bring a ‘camping style’ chair if this will help when viewing.

If you would like to take your child out of school for lunch on the day, please adhere to the normal procedures of letting the school office know and by collecting them from the normal end of day pick up points. Please ensure the class teacher is aware of the lunchtime arrangements.

Good luck to all of the houses, I am sure it will be another fantastic event!

Big Walk and Wheel

What an amazing two weeks. Congratulations to everyone who took part!

The school is currently 43rd on the UK leader board with 3215 total journeys and 85.66% of the school participating in active journeys.

This is a fantastic achievement.

We look forward to announcing the Mrs Ferguson Big Pedal award for the winning class after the Easter Holidays.

Have a great holiday!

Park Mains Youth Participatory Project

Park Mains S5 and S6 pupils have been visiting the school for the last four weeks as part of their Sports development class. They have been trained up to deliver different sessions relating to the PE curriculum and have been working with our Primary 7 pupils.

The pupils have really enjoyed the experience having lots of fun whilst developing their teamwork, throwing, catching and hand-eye coordination.

A big thank you to Mia, Olivia, Dillion and Sam for all of their hard work. Here are some pictures of our sessions.

Big Walk and Wheel 2022: 21st March to 1st April

Big-Walk-and-Wheel-2022–parent-letter

Get set… we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2022 (the new name for Big Pedal), the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 21st March to 1st April. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event. We will also schedule some activities in the playground for each class throughout the week.

Including everyone

We want to make sure that everyone can get involved in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel.

We know there may be things which make it more difficult for some pupils to take part than others. If you want to discuss more about your child(ren)’s specific needs, please contact Mr McAvoy and we will make sure that there is a way for your child to take part.

There are only a few simple rules –

-All children must wear a helmet on a bike.
-Bikes and scooters should be wheeled through the playground on the way in and out of school and on the ashy path.
– Each class will get a chance to walk, run, cycle and scoot with their friends in the playground throughout the week.

For more information about the event go to www.bigwalkandwheel.org.uk.
Enjoy the challenge!

Best wishes

Mr McAvoy

Judo Visit

Pupils in Primary 3-7 were very lucky to have Paul, Rebecca and Rebecca from Clyde Judo Club visit last week.

All of the pupils received a Judo taster session during PE which was very successful. The pupils learned all about Judo, Japanese culture and had the opportunity to try new skills.

It was great for our pupils to meet Rebecca L, a former Hawks House Captain, who started learning Judo in Primary school and has went on to have a very successful career so far!

Thank you Clyde Judo for the wonderful experience.
