Our poems have been getting some attention on the school’s Twitter page. It is wonderful to have our work read by other poets and we our proud of our writing.

Recently we have had a teaching student in our class. She has been a wonderful addition to our teaching staff and the pupils’ work has benefited from her guidance and attention.  As a parting gift she wrote the class a poem, which for me was a perfect present and one that will last. When we read it on Friday the pupils were delighted and asked me to share a copy.

Miss McOwan wrote this poem after observing a poetry lesson where we used Selima Hill’s Cow poem as a frame. You can read the P7 versions here.

We’ll miss you Miss McOwan

This week we have been listening to the work of Raymond Antrobus. The class have discussed his poem, ‘I Want the Confidence of’ and another one by a poet call Linnet, aged 15. We then thought about something we lack: confidence, loyalty, luck, bravery, a best friend. We compared this with people, animals and objects we imagine have this quality. We’d love to hear your thoughts on our work.

Raymond Antrobus  is a poet, writer and investigator of missing sounds. Check out his website and his poem, ‘The First Time I Wore Hearing Aids’. It is a profound insight into his world.

 

Welcome to our latest poetry adventure!

These poems are based on a frame by Edip Cansever, a Turkish poet. 
We listened to the poem and talked about what it meant. Our teacher encouraged us to break the poem into three parts.

First we wrote down physical items,
then memories of the day,
finally we lay down things swirling around in our minds.

We have been working hard in class to practise poems to read classes throughout the school for National Poetry Day on Thursday. Some of the poems are our own and some are ones we have found funny or silly. We think they will appeal to a younger audience.

Mark Bird of Dream Beast Poems has been helping us with his own poems The Scaredy Cat and I Did Not Choose, written for the theme of National Poetry Day: Choice.

We are reading Scaredy Cat to some of the classes and we have written our own I Did Not Choose Poems. Mark has even featured us on his own blog. It is fantastic to have a published poet read and comment on our work.

I am very excited; we are four weeks into the first term of a new academic year and already I have read some noteworthy poems. We will be sharing them shortly. As we learn about Blogs and publishing our own work everyone in P7 will become editors and begin to navigate sharing their writing online.

We hope you will join us on adventures into poetry and comment on poems you enjoy. Feedback is a vital part of an emerging writer’s journey.
