REPRESENTATIONS // KYLO REN vs HAN SOLO

image

Using our new found knowledge of technical and cultural codes, we’ve been picking apart the “Kylo vs Han” scene. Everyone worked really well thinking about camera shots, angles and lighting.

REMEMBER:

It is vital you know the difference between a technical code and a cultural code.

Technical codes are all the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text, for example the camera work in a film.

Cultural codes are defined as symbols and systems of meaning that are relevant to members of a particular culture. (What we most likely assume because of the society we are part of.)

STAR WARS // REPRESENTATION // REY

rey bb8

We’ve started talking about representations in Star Wars. You’ll need to think about stereotypical and non-stereotypical characters. Rey provoked a very strong audience response due to her being  strong, female hero.

The article we looked at can be found here; Click here.

REMEMBER:

  • Star Wars is a massive franchise and cast a woman in a lead role
  • Rey’s central concern is not to be a love interest.
  • Her outfit
  • Potential Jedi
  • Able pilot
  • Warrior
  • Believable and relatable
  • Positive impact on young girls who will feel represented and empowered
  • The importance of Rey telling Finn “I know how to run without you holding my hand.”
  • The importance of Han Solo regognising Rey’s skills and talents (offers her a job, lets her use Millennium Falcon, gives her a blaster to use in the battle. (“I think I can handle myself” // “That’s why I’m giving it to you.”))

Can you think of other parts of the film where this representation is shown?

STAR WARS // NARRATIVE // PROPP

STAR WARS PROPP CHARACTER POSTERS

We’ve now finished watching Star Wars (unless you were out on Friday, in which case you’ll need to arrange to catch up with me).

Now we’ve seen the full thing, we have been thinking about applying Propp’s theory to the characters in Star Wars.

We’ve discovered that characters often take on more than one character type. You need to be able to identify specific parts of the film where the character serves a function.

Great work today folks. Keep it up.
