We’ve started talking about representations in Star Wars. You’ll need to think about stereotypical and non-stereotypical characters. Rey provoked a very strong audience response due to her being  strong, female hero.

The article we looked at can be found here; Click here.

REMEMBER:

  • Star Wars is a massive franchise and cast a woman in a lead role
  • Rey’s central concern is not to be a love interest.
  • Her outfit
  • Potential Jedi
  • Able pilot
  • Warrior
  • Believable and relatable
  • Positive impact on young girls who will feel represented and empowered
  • The importance of Rey telling Finn “I know how to run without you holding my hand.”
  • The importance of Han Solo regognising Rey’s skills and talents (offers her a job, lets her use Millennium Falcon, gives her a blaster to use in the battle. (“I think I can handle myself” // “That’s why I’m giving it to you.”))

Can you think of other parts of the film where this representation is shown?
