Glow Blogs – Orkney

This term the Primary children are learning about weather, climate and energy. The Nursery children have been enjoying playing with farms, dinosaurs and babies. We enjoyed taking part in some activities through the Orkney Science Festival. P6 children enjoyed Outdoor Education in Kirkwall. The primary children have been swimming in Kirkwall each Friday. A final ‘cheerio’ message from the P7 class! Huge thanks to Miss Clements and Miss Allnutt and all the instructors at the outdoor centre who ensured everyone had a brilliant week in Hoy. Stromness Academy has had its first HMIe School Inspection in 14 years. This secondary school takes all its 350 pupils from eight of the parishes in the west mainland of Orkney. During the week 24th March 2025, HMIe came to Stromness and did a whole school inspection, from the Home Economics department to Music, talking to not only to staff but also to the students. The staff – teachers and non-teaching – had mixed feelings about this, one teacher saying they were “Super Stressed” and others stating “It was a useful and positive experience” or they were “not worried”. Some of the older children went to the STEM challenge day in Kirkwall. They had to build a vehicle to lay a subsea cable, give a presentation about their learning in STEM subjects and take part in various challenged. The Shapinsay Science Squad were delighted to be awarded the runners up prize for the STEM challenges.
