Here are today’s lessons:

Literacy: Spelling ✏ 

Use your spelling method to help you learn your words:

 

LOOK: at a small group of words and their letter patterns.

SAY: the words quietly, thinking about the letter patterns.

COVER: the key word list.

WRITE: the group of words you have practised

CHECK: how many you have spelt correctly. If you need to, have another go.

 

Warm up

• I can read, write and spell ‘ar and are’ words.

Task – Focus – Record your date, title and I can in your jotter. Write out your words from the key word box using look, say, cover, write, check with a finger space between each word.

A) Look at the pictures. Write the correct ar or are words in your jotter.

B) Look at the key words. Copy four with the art pattern neatly into your jotter.

C) Write a sentence that includes two key words in it.

 

Main Activity

• I can sort the key words into sound pattern families
• I can include my ar and are words in sentences
• I can choose the correct ending for my root word

Task: Extra – A. Draw two columns in your jotter – one with the heading ‘words with ar sounding like car‘ and the other with the heading ‘words with are sounding like care.’

Sort the key words into sound families, like shown in the text, then record them under the correct column,

Write one sentence using an ‘ar‘ word and another sentence using an ‘are’ word.

Extension – Put one ending on each word from the root word box, without changing any spellings. Think carefully! for example:

1.  care  + fully = carefully

Warm up – Sumdog Spelling

Main Actvity – Free Writing – Narrative ✏️ 

This week is FREE WRITING where you can write a story of your choice. If you are struggling to think of an idea, I have given you some ideas below. You are free to write as much as you like – it can be as short as a few sentences for Beginning, Middle and End or three detailed paragraphs for BME. The choice is yours! 😃

The first thing to do is spend time planning your story. You could use either a story planning sheet or a story mountain to help you plan what happens.

You could perhaps write about:

• Magical Powers – Suppose you had the power of magic. You could do anything you wanted to do. You could make all of your wishes come true. What would your first three wishes be? How would you make them come true? What would happen? Write your BME.
• If I was – If you were not you, who would you like to be? Somebody you know? A super hero? A special kind of person? I would be __________. Think of what would happen. Write your BME.
• Space Adventure – In the box is a very special spacesuit just for you. Open the box carefully. Put on the spacesuit. Climb into your spaceship and – off you go! Write your BME.
• Ben’s Adventure – This is Ben the dog. He’s got nothing to do and no one to play with. Don’t let him get bored! Make up a friend for him and send them off on an adventure. Write your BME.
• Help! – Imagine one day you go to school and just as you go in, everything shrinks. Except you! Suddenly everything is tiny and you’re a great big giant. What do you do? Write your BME.
• Pirate Pete – This is Pirate Pete. He is sailing on a gigantic ship across the seas. Pirate Pete is looking for an island with a cave. He wants to hid some treasure in the cave. What happens? Write your BME.
• The Dreaded Dragon – The dreaded dragon has come to town. The people are frightened and run away. The hide in their houses. But along comes someone who saves them. Who? Wrote your BME.

 

Success Criteria: (My Story has)

• an interesting Title
• Described the setting and atmosphere using descriptive language (adjectives/ adverbs/ wow words)
• I have introduced my character(s) and told the reader about them (adjectives/adverbs)
• I have explained what is happening at the beginning of the story – B
• My story has an interesting and believable problem – M
• My character solves the problem in a believable way
• I have shown the thoughts and feelings of my character as they deal with the problem
• I have finished writing effectively to complete the story – E
• I have written in paragraphs – new idea or event for each
• I can include Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation in my writing
• I can add speech in my story *Bonus Points*
• I can read and check that my writing makes sense

You should use your strategy of Guess > Check > Improve to solve the problem. If you do not get it right first time, keep on trying! 👍🏼

This could be: rainbow spelling, bubble words, ABC words (alphabetical order), curly words, word shapes, words in silly sentences, blue vowels and red consonants (or other colours), capital and lower case words or simply write out 4x in your jotter.

Read each question carefully. Think about what it is asking you to do.

Share each given number by halving – sharing equally between 2. Make links here with the two times tables are your doubles.

(You could draw 8 dots/circles and split them into equal groups of 4 or make links with your 2 x table. 2 x 4 = 8)

2.a. 4 dividied by 2 = 2

(Make links with muliplication 2 x 2 = 4)

3.a. 10 divided by 2 = 5

(Make links with muliplication 2 x 5 = 10)

4.a. 14 divided by 2 = 7

Warm up

• I can practise my horizontal join in ou, out and ow.

In your jotter, write your date, title and ‘I can’ neatly. Copy your join ‘ou’ and the sentence from above. Take care to hook the letter o to another by using a horizontal join. When you bring your pencil down, up and round for ‘r’ this hook will help you to join the letter to other letters. (There’s and brown)

FOCUS – A. Copy this pattern into your book. B. Copy the joined letters ‘ou’ for one line in your jotter, ‘out’ for a second line in your jotter and ‘ow’ for a third line in your jotter.

 

Main Activity ✏️

Why not time yourself, how many times can you read and write numbers in 1/ 3/ 5 or 10 minutes? ⏰

 

Main Activity: Adding several numbers 🔢

• I can group helpful numbers

Read each question carefully. Think about what it is asking you to do and look for your number clues.  Record your number sentence in your jotter. Remember to record £ because you are finding the cost in pounds. For example:

1.a.  £3 + £12 + £7 = £22

You can group the helpful numbers together first, starting with the largest £12 + £7 = £19 then add £3 = £22

2.a.  15 + 6 + 15 + 1 = 37

(double 15 is 30 then add on 6 = 36 and add 1 = 37)

3.a.  17 + ? + 3 = 32

(use your number clues – 17 + 3 = 20 then count on to 32 to find the missing answer = 12)

When you have two  or more missing numbers, you can subtract your number clue from the answer then split that number between the two symbols.

You can use your 100-square to help you count on. 👍🏼

Check over your answers and traffic-light your work. 🔍

Good morning everyone,

Today is a new month – it is the 1st June and the first day of SUMMER! We have been so lucky to have had such wonderful weather so far. ☀️

I hope you were delighted to see your family or friends at the weekend whilst socially distancing. I certainly was! 😃

Did you manage to see the launch of NASA SpaceX Falcon 9 on Saturday? I could not believe my eyes, it was amazing! I thought the spacecraft Crew Dragon that was carried by the rocket was incredible. As Bob and Doug sat inside ascending into space, we could see all of the screen displays and controls inside the spacecraft. Then the rocket landed back on a floating drone ship at sea. Wow! 🚀

Main Actvity – Lockdown Letter ✏️ 

This week’s writing focus is to write an informal letter about Lockdown. It could be a letter with a message to a friend you might be missing, a grandparent, your teacher or any other family member. You are free to write as much as you like – it can be as short as one small message in a paragraph or as many as three detailed paragraphs. The choice is yours!

Success Criteria

• I can set up my letter with the sender’s address, the date and Dear
• I can write a good opening sentence that states what my letter is about
• I can organise my writing into 1/ 2 or 3 paragraphs
• I can use the past or present tense
• I can include Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation in my writing

Maths: Multiplication🔵

So far we have covered the 2, 10, 5, 3 and 4 times tables. On a Friday we focus on Problem Solving and Enquiry.

Warm up task:  2, 5 and 10 times tables🔵

Practise counting out loud in steps of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s for your times tables. You could shout it out in: a loud voice, a quiet whispering voice, a squeaky voice, a robot voice or a funny voice.

0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24.

0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60.

0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120.

Main Activity – Problem Solving and Enquiry🔵

Today’s Problem Solving is based on buying ‘Spacepops’ where you have to find the cost of each item. However, to solve the problem you have to: work out the cost of one set of lollipops then work out the cost of the second set and add them together to find the total cost. Remember to include your p for pence to show the cost of the items. 👍🏼

Here is an example to help you:

🌶1.a. 5 x 5 = 25p     3 x 7 = 21p (red lollipops)

25 + 21 = 46p

🌶🌶2.a.  Problem: I bought 4 red and 1 green lollipop for 46p. How much do each cost. One strategy is to split up your 46p by partitioning Tens and Units – 40 + 6.

To make 40 I could use 4 x 10 = 40p  and I could use 2 x 3 = 6p (to make 6)

*You can use your own multiplication sums as long as the total calculates 46p.

When using guess, check and improve strategy it is ok to give it a try and not get the answer first time. Go back and have another go and think about your number facts to make the given number.

🌶🌶🌶3.a. Problem: I spent exactly £1. I bought 10 spaceships of one colour and 5 different of another colour. Which two colours of Spacepops did Zonk buy?

For this question, use you jotter and show all of your working. You will have to spend time making calculations for step 1 and 2 and checking possible answers for both steps. You should go through each colour of space pop and multiply by 10 (step 1) and record your answer. Then go through each colour of spacepop again and multiply by 5 (step 2) and record your answer.

Take time to add together one answer from each colour from x10 and x5 until you make 100 for £1.

Layout – x 10 (Step 1)

purple: 5 x 10= 50  green: 6 x 10 = 60  red: 7 x 10 = 70  brown: 8 x 10 = 80  yellow:  9 x 10 = 90.

and do the same for the second step – multiplying by 5. Remember your colours must be different.

I will post the answers on Monday for you to check and mark.

Good morning boys and girls.

I hope you are all ok and managing to stay safe. Were you lucky enough to be allowed to stay up late and watch the live rocket launch? Sadly, it’s been rescheduled to Saturday due to the weather but at least it’s at an earlier time. 🚀

Have you been managing to get out for a walk? Stephen and I tried a new walking route yesterday, along past the fields and woods. It was great – we even saw a squirrel and some horses! 🐿

Every sentence has a verb. Every sentence also has a subject. This is the main person or thing. The verb tells us what the person or thing did.

Maths: Multiplication💙

So far we have covered the 2, 10, 5, 3 and 4 times tables. We are extending our learning to 2-digit multiplication.

• I can build up my times tables
• I can use repeated addition to work out table facts (counting on in 2’s, 3’s and 4’s)

Warm up task:  2, 3 and 4 times tables💙

Practise counting out loud in steps of 2’s, 3’s and 4’s for your times tables. You could shout it out in: a loud voice, a quiet whispering voice, a squeaky voice, a robot voice or a funny voice.

0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24.

0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36.

Main Activity – Multiplication: 2-digit number by 2, 3 and 4.

• I can count on and back in 2’s, 3’s and 4’s accurately.
• I can recall my times tables facts for 2, 3 and 4.

Read each question carefully. Think about what it is asking you to do. One strategy to use is to multiply the units then the tens and add them together. Another strategy is to write out as a formal sum just like we practised on whiteboards. Make links here with how we would calculate formal addition and subtraction chimney sums. Start by multiplying the units then tens.

Remember to show your answer with p for pence as we are working out the cost.

You can choose which way works best for you.

Here is an example:

1a. 2 x 21p = 42p

(You can start with the units. 2 x 1 = 2

then work out the tens, 2 x 20 = 40

add your answers together 40 + 2 = 42p)

or you can write out your sums formal using the ‘chimney sum’ method just like we practised on whiteboards.

1. Write out your sum with neat column layout.

2. Multiply your bottom number (2) by the Units. Record your answer under the Units column.

3. Multiply your bottom number (2) by the Tens. Record your answer under then Tens column.

Please use whichever  way works best for you.

Remember you can also use your number tracks or 100-square to help you too.

Check over your answers and traffic-light your work.
