Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Maths to complete our STEM Week. Our Maths focus today was to investigate and share understanding of the roman numeral number system used in history.

We discussed that Roman Numerals are found all around us on: clocks, watches, sun dials, film dates, book chapters and numbering, as bullet points and as the titles of Kings, Queens or Popes.

It was interesting to explore how Roman Numerals use 7 different letters to indicate numbers. We made links with larger numbers being made by combining the letters in different ways. We used the letters to match to our number system and then wrote the symbols for a set of our numbers.

Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Engineering as part of STEM Week. Engineering is all about designing, solving problems, creating, using materials and building. There were two design briefs, to make a bridge that would hold objects and design a boat that would float.

We explored how we could make the materials stronger, and the shapes that would be strongest.

Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Science with Mrs Maher as part of STEM WEEK. Our theme was ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and we made our own frothing foaming mixture that would explode Grandma away.

Today we used: food colouring in water, bicarbonate soda, washing up liquid and vinegar.

A simple chemical reaction took place when we added the vinegar because it reacted to the bicarbonate of soda. It created a gas, carbon dioxide and we saw bubbles trying to expand out of the liquid.

It was foam-tastic!! 🙂

Primary 4 are thoroughly enjoying our basketball coach being in with us on Wednesday’s PE time. This week our focus has been travelling with the ball and goal shooting.

SUMDOG MATHS SCOTLAND CONTEST STARTS TOMORROW!

Take part in the Sumdog Maths Scotland Contest from Friday 27^th September – Thursday 3^rd October.

To take part in a Sumdog contest, pupils simply play Sumdog’s online maths games, any time during the contest week.

Big Reading

In chapter 3 and 4 where George begins to make the magic medicine for Grandma, he works his way around the house using his rule ‘Whatever it is; runny, powdery or gooey, in it goes.’ Today we sorted all of the ingredients into the correct category and each group carried out some interesting discussions.

Primary 4 are looking for any extra clear plastic bottles that you may have to help us out for STEM week. We understand that everyone is trying to ‘reduce plastic pollution’ and not everyone may have these.

If you do, please hand in to Mrs Maher or Primary 4 on Tuesday for house points.

On Thursday we took part in some Music Madness with Clare our Kodaly teacher. We focused on the pulse and beats and the rhythm, rhyme and the rap of different songs. #Boomchikaboom

Thank you to everyone who came along last night to Meet the Teacher, it was lovely to meet mums and dads and to let the children show you around our classroom.

Some parents asked for the link to the ‘Topmarks’ website. We often use the learning games and whiteboard resources in class to support our learning and the children love to join in. In the Maths section, we use the Ordering, Sequencing and Place Value games. (The Greatest Game Ever is at the bottom)

P.S Remember your homework!

Today Primary 4 were handed out their new homework folders. This contains a homework jotter and a homework task grid – please keep these inside your poly-pocket just in case there is a spillage in your school bag.

Complete your homework by choosing and carrying out one task each week. You can colour/ tick this box in to show it has been done. Then it should be signed by an adult to show it has been checked.

Homework is to be handed in every Monday. Where there is a holiday, the hand in date will be the Tuesday. The final hand in date is Monday 25th November.

Every child who completes their homework will receive a reward. Two ‘Homework Stars’ will be chosen each week for a certificate as well as 50 homework house points for good effort.

SPECIAL HOMEWORK

Thank you to the boys and girls who brought in their special homework. Primary 4 have had such a fun time listening to everyone’s ‘All About Me’ homework presentations.  We had some wonderful posters, presentations, photographs and story boards.

I was delighted with how much time and effort you all clearly spent on them!  (Huge thank you to all the mums and dads)
