This week in Primary 4

This week, Primary 4 have been using their learning ladders to reflect on their progress in Term 1. We have identified: what we have done well, what we need more practise and what we plan to do to improve next time. It is nice to take time to reflect on our success!

On Wednesday, we thoroughly enjoyed having our basketball coach during PE time. This week our focus has been defending.

Our top tips are:

  • You cannot just hold the ball and run
  • Try to block your opponent
  • Move around on the court

On Thursday, we started to plan our recount of STEM week. Planning helps us to: bring ideas together, plan the flow of our writing and identify VCOP that will make our writing interesting to read. Our next step is writing in paragraphs.

Here we are doing think, pair, share…

Today we took part in MacMillan coffee morning at Woodlands. Amazingly, we performed on stage to the parents/ carers that came to see us. We have raised a fantastic amount of money for a great cause. Well done!

STEM Week – Maths

Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Maths to complete our STEM Week. Our Maths focus today was to investigate and share understanding of the roman numeral number system used in history.

We discussed that Roman Numerals are found all around us on: clocks, watches, sun dials, film dates, book chapters and numbering, as bullet points and as the titles of Kings, Queens or Popes.

It was interesting to explore how Roman Numerals use 7 different letters to indicate numbers. We made links with larger numbers being made by combining the letters in different ways. We used the letters to match to our number system and then wrote the symbols for a set of our numbers.

Well done boys and girls!

STEM WEEK – ENGINEERING

Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Engineering as part of STEM Week. Engineering is all about designing, solving problems, creating, using materials and building. There were two design briefs, to make a bridge that would hold objects and design a boat that would float.

We explored how we could make the materials stronger, and the shapes that would be strongest.

STEM WEEK – Technology

Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Technology with Mrs Maher as part of STEM WEEK. Our theme was ‘Vikings’ and ‘Victorians’ and we researched technological achievements during these different time periods. Our next step is to compare them to our modern day technologies.

I wonder what changes we will see…

STEM WEEK – Science

Primary 4 and Primary 4/5 took part in Science with Mrs Maher as part of STEM WEEK. Our theme was ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and we made our own frothing foaming mixture that would explode Grandma away.

Today we used: food colouring in water, bicarbonate soda, washing up liquid and vinegar.

A simple chemical reaction took place when we added the vinegar because it reacted to the bicarbonate of soda. It created a gas, carbon dioxide and we saw bubbles trying to expand out of the liquid.

It was foam-tastic!! πŸ™‚
