P6 Maths Trail

This week is maths week.  As the p7s were out of school today on a trip, the P6s joined with Mrs Pollock’s P6s for an outdoor maths challenge.  In pairs, we had to investigate areas in the school grounds to solve mathematical questions and problems, such as, how many wheels are there altogether in the school car park? And if you multiplied all the benches in the school by 5 how many would there be?

It it got us thinking and we discovered that there were many different ways to solve questions and calculate the answers.

Later in the week we are going to create our own maths trails for the p5s to solve!

Making our own mini books!

Today we used sheets of paper to make mini books. We followed instructions to fold, crease and cut paper to make it into a 6 page blank booklet with a front and back cover. We are going to write and illustrate our own fiction or non fiction mini book of our choice, to show our own interests and to encourage writing for pleasure.   We have some great ideas for themes so far, including unicorns, football, rugby, vampires, battle of the sky gods, gymnastics, favourite characters, autobiographies, a haunted house and becoming stranded on an island!  I can’t wait to read them when they are finished.

P6/7 Homework 5.9.17

Homework jotters were issued today.  Homework will be given on a Tuesday to be completed and handed in by the following Monday.  It may be handed in before the deadline.

Literacy – Spelling

Children all have 10 of their own personal spelling words to learn – words which they personally found tricky in an initial assessment.  these are written in their jotters.  Learn these words for next Monday and use them to write at least 5 sentences including the words.  Please include some WOW vocabulary in your writing – ie interesting adjectives and adverbs, sentence openers and connectives to make your writing more interesting.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about Place Value.

Log onto Active Learn at home to play the Place Value games which have been allocated to your account.

Then complete 2 of the activities below:

House Prices: using newspapers, computer with internet access.  Ask children to find different house prices from adverts in the local paper or the internet.  they list up to 10 prices in their jotters.  They underline one digit of each house price and identify the value of the underlined digit, using words and figures e. £184,000.  The value of the digit 8 is eighty thousand pounds or £80,000.

Space Hopping: Ask children to research the distance from the Earth to the Moon and other planets, eg. it is about 384, 403 km to the Moon.  children record their information in digits and in words and write the distances in order.

Digit shuffle Ask children to write the last three digits of a phone number (their own or a friend’s). The three digits must be different. They write all the different 2 digit numbers that they can make with the digits. For each number, they partition the digits and give their values, e.g. 24 = 2 tens and 4 units = 20 + 4.

Digit shuffle Ask children to write the last six digits of a phone number (their own or a friend’s) into their learning logs. For each number they write it in words and partition the digits like this: 387 249 is three hundred and eighty- seven thousand, two hundred and forty-nine. 387 249 = 387 000 + 249.

Topic

As a class, we have decided that we would like to learn about Space as our topic this term.  At home could you find out and write down at least one Fantastic Fact that you learn about Space from your research, to share with the class.

Exploring Place Value

We have been exploring Place value and also revising our times tables to try and learn them off by heart. We are using lots of materials to help us, such as place value dice and place value arrow cards. We have also been timing ourselves to complete a timea tables sheet. Can you beat your previous score?
