Transition to P1

Why are Transitions Important?
Transition is what we call it when a child moves from one thing to another. There are lots of little transitions during the day, getting dressed, turning the television off, putting jackets on to go outside, all parents know that some transition are easier than others! Other transitions are bigger, for example starting a new nursery or school. All children need help to prepare them for transition.

Transition Plans for 2021

We would like to warmly welcome all our pre-school children to attend a series of induction events over the coming months. These events have been organised to allow your child to have as many opportunities to take part in school life before August. This will also allow them to meet many of the school staff and of course their new classmates before starting school. This process will hopefully ensure a smooth transition from nursery to primary school.

With COVID restrictions still in place, we are going to facilitate a mixture of online and in-person transition events in the final term. We will begin by introducing ‘Transition Tuesdays’ where the children will undertake a range of activities to help them through the transition process. This may take the form of online activities, video calls, stories, teaching of playground games/routines, virtual tours etc…. These sessions will start on Tuesday 27th April and run for 5 weeks. These activities will be able to be undertaken in your child’s current nursery bubble.

In addition to this, our final term of planning in the nursery will be centred on the Julia Donaldson book, The Everywhere Bear. The boys and girls will use this as a stimulus for learning and you’ll be pleased to know you will even get a very special visit from the bear too. (Please note the bears will be sanitised before and after visiting each household). We will document all of the ‘adventures’ that the Everywhere Bear takes. These ‘adventures’ will continue over the Summer Holidays and appear on Teams for you to discuss with your child to keep the connection going with the P1 teachers. When your child starts school in August the journey of the Everywhere Bear from Nursery-P1 will be reviewed with their classmates.

Here is a link to the Everywhere Bear Story to allow you to familiarise yourself with it.

On the 1st and 8th of June we will organise more formal transition visits for Outdoor Learning activities to the school yard/forest area. More details on these visits will follow nearer the time and be emailed to you.
