🌟 Primary 6/7: What We’ve Been Learning 🌟

What a fantastic start we have had to the new school year! Primary 6/7 have settled back into school routines and have been busy learning, working together and developing their personal targets.

📚 Literacy

In Literacy, we have been developing our phonemes, affixes, common words and spelling rules through our Active Literacy programme. In Writing, we have explored different genres including recounts, letter writing and imaginative narratives, developing our vocabulary, sentence structure and ability to organise our ideas. We recently finished our class novel, The Witches by Roald Dahl, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed! We have also been enjoying the film during Friday Fun 31. We are now reading our group novels, matched to our stage of learning.

🔢 Numeracy and Mathematics

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we have been developing our addition strategies through Number Talks, exploring different ways to solve calculations efficiently. We have been learning to make tens, use friendly numbers and break numbers down using place value to help us solve problems mentally. Within our maths groups, we have also been developing our understanding of place value, rounding and number, while continuing to build our confidence and fluency with mental maths and times tables. We have been encouraged to explain our thinking, share different strategies and learn from one another when solving mathematical problems.

💛 Health and Wellbeing

Through Emotion Works, we have been revisiting emotion words and developing a wider emotional vocabulary. We are learning to use more precise words to describe our feelings and are beginning to use these within our writing. We have also been learning about the UNCRC and worked together to create our class charter. We discussed our rights and responsibilities, as well as what makes a good classmate, including being kind, respectful, supportive and inclusive.

🏑 PE and Teamwork

In PE, we have been developing our hockey skills, focusing on passing, controlling the ball, movement and working effectively as part of a team. We have also taken part in a variety of teamwork games, developing our communication, cooperation and sportsmanship. Our Primary 7 pupils have enjoyed working alongside the other P7 class on Thursdays with the Cardinal Newman High School Play Leaders, developing their leadership and teamwork skills.

🙏 Religious Education

In RE, we have been learning about the beginning of the school year, including prayers, our school community and what makes each of us unique. We have also explored the lives of St Francis and St Clare of Assisi, as well as St Columba and Iona, making links with our Scottish heritage. Our Primary 7 pupils have also begun their Confirmation preparation, reflecting on their faith and preparing for their Sacrament in November.

🌴 Our Rainforest Topic

Our class topic this term is The Rainforest, and we have been discovering what makes these environments so special. We have been learning about the conditions needed for a rainforest to thrive, exploring different animals and using statistics to find out more about them. We have also been developing our research and digital skills, learning how to find reliable information, use information texts and work collaboratively with our peers. We have enjoyed sharing our findings and building our knowledge of this fascinating environment.

⭐ Looking Ahead

It has been a wonderful first two months back at school! The children have worked hard, embraced new learning and continued to work towards the personal targets they set at the beginning of the year. We are excited to see what the rest of the year will bring!
