September in Primary 5/6!

Welcome to our first blog entry of the year!

The first few weeks have been busy yet exciting as we have focused on settling into Primary 5/6. We are delighted with how well everyone has come together and it has been wonderful to see our positive class ethos developing.

At the start of the term, we spent some time exploring The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. Hopefully, you have heard some of our discussions at home. Through this inspiring book, we have reflected on what friendship looks like, how we should treat others and most importantly, the value of kindness. These conversations have helped us develop a shared understanding of our goals in Primary 5/6: to always try our best, to show kindness and respect to those around us and to recognise how important it is that we experience kindness and respect ourselves. We are excited to continue building on these values throughout the year.

We have worked as whole class on our first reading book before we move into groups. We have been reading ‘Jessica Haggerthwaite: Witch Dispatcher.’ We are almost finished and have experienced great enjoyment reading how Jessica and her brother were worried that Mum wanted to become a professional witch. We focused on learning the reading strategies of inference, prior knowledge, comprehension questions, metalinguistics and summary.

In Numeracy, we spent the first few weeks revisiting and consolidating key learning from last year. We have now moved on to place value, with partitioning numbers being a particular highlight. Over the coming weeks, we will focus on the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We are pleased with the progress made so far and look forward to building on this success.

A few highlights of September have been our incredible singing to celebrate Father Parkes, working together as a team, having our movie afternoon to celebrate our hard work and, a favourite for all, we are discovering the value of brain breaks.

Thank you for reading our blog, we hope you enjoy some snap shots below!
