Here in Primary 5/6 we have been using a range of Active Literacy Reading Strategies with our novels. The Minions have been reading ‘The Borrowers’ by Mary Norton and have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book in school as well as at home. The Scooby Doo Crew have been reading ‘Emily’s Surprising Voyage’ by Sue Purkiss, which has been enjoyable as they join the voyage to Australia on the first ever iron ship with Emily and they meet interesting characters throughout the journey. The Duck Squad have been enjoying reading ‘Through the Cat Flap’ by Ian Whybrow and The Sonic group has been learning a range of Non-fiction and Fiction reading books, helping with decoding skills, comprehension skills, confidence and pleasure of reading.

In Maths, we have been learning a range of topics throughout the first two terms. Working with Mrs Goldie with our Measure topic and enjoyed using active materials to help understand how to convert between different units of measurement. With both Mrs Clarke and Mr Rice we have been working hard on the four main operations and carrying out a range of strategies to solve calculations within each lesson. Using our Number Talks lessons and the strategies learned to help with these calculations and challenging ourselves with word problems recently to help stop and think what the question is looking for us to use and working with the strategies learned to achieve the correct answer.

We have all been enjoying our new class topic ‘The Victorian Era’, learning all about the school life and housing back during the Victorian Era and what the similarities and differences are to today. With a range of researching and class discussions we have thoroughly enjoyed learning all out the Victorians.
