Bridges for Schools -Group 2

November 8, 2017 by Mrs De Rosa | 0 comments

The girls from P5D had a super time learning all about Civil Engineering from the team from BAM Nuttall.

Devyn – I learned about the different things that Civil Engineers build. I enjoyed being the Quantity Surveyor during our task as I got to be in charge of the money! I also liked attaching the cables of the bridge.

Katie – I learned that you don’t have to be physically strong to be a Civil Engineer but you do need to have a strong mind. I liked being the Project Manager because I got to tell people what to do which was fun.

Hannah – I was happy that we worked as a team and actually managed to build a bridge that we could walk across!

Lauryn – I enjoyed working with my team to connect all the boards together.

Bridges to Schools:Group 1

Our P5 pupils had an extremely exiting day on Thursday 2nd November. The pupils had the opportunity to work with a group of  ambassadors from The Institute of Civil Engineers on the Bridges to Schools project.

Bridges to Schools is a hands-on activity which gives pupils the chance to build a 13m long cable stayed bridge. Having assembled the bridge they then walk across it, learning about bridges, teamwork and civil engineering as they go.

The children had an amazing time finding about the work of Civil Engineers and working together as a team to build the bridge within the set budget.

Thursday posts and tweets

Hi Everyone,

We are glad that you have enjoyed the children’s messages on Twitter. It won’t be long before you are reunited with them and you can hear all about their adventures first hand.

Thursday will be a very busy day as we will be participating in our last two activities then getting ready for the Halloween disco.  We will also need to start packing!

As a result of this, we will not be able to add any new posts or tweets.  We will however still be taking lots of photos so that we can share them with you at another time.  On Friday, the instructors will also give us a copy of all the pictures they have taken throughout the week.

As discussed, we will keep you updated throughout our journey home so that you know when we will be arriving at school.

Thanks for all your support throughout the week.

Hill Walking Fun

November 2, 2017 by Mrs Shaw | 0 comments

Today we had a fab time hill walking with Keith. We walked up a not so tiny hill!!!!  But it was worth it for the view alone. The children were amazed at how far they could see. Then we got the chance to slide down some hills, jump in a rather smelly peat bog. One of the boys got a real shock when he jumped in,what he thought was a puddle!

We we finished up by exploring a tiny rock cave at the roadside.

What Goes Bump in the Night?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The woods around Kilbowie were filled with the screams of 45 children. The children had a ball tonight. They were all blind folded and then led out to the woods in the grounds of Kilbowie. They had to navigate their way round the woods in the pitch black and blind folded. They had to make their way through tunnels, round trees, under branches and over logs. Needless to say there was a few bumps on the way. But the children were amazing and worked together to make sure that everyone made it round the whole course.

Hillwalk!

This this is no ordinary walk.

This is a Kilbowie-rainy-day-wet-and-wild-adventure walk.

With puddles up to our shoulders and hillside slides, what’s not to love?!

Hitting the slopes!!

After an energetic morning in the gorge and a delicious lunch, we hit the slopes.  The children listened well to their safety talk then showed off their skills on the slopes – definitely think some children might be coming home with a new hobby!  Well done to everyone for having a go and really challenging yourselves!

Great fun at Glen Lonan Gorge

November 1, 2017 by Mrs Shaw | 0 comments

In the afternoon we went gorge walking. First we had to get kitted out with our safety equipment? Then we all got in the minibus to go to the gorge. At one point we had to drive very slowly until the highland cows and sheep decided to move off the road in front of us and let us past. As soon as we got off the minibus we had to cross a tiny trickle of water and all the children were screaming about how cold the water was. But by the end all of the children were climbing up rocks, sliding or jumping into the freezing cold frothy water and floating down the gorge. That little trickle of water now looked so tame.
