The big day finally arrived today! After 6 weeks of hard work looking after our fish eggs, watching them hatch and enter the alevin stage of development and then fry, it was time for us to set them free into the River Clyde.

The boys and girls were very excited as we set off for Strathclyde Park with our tubs of fish. We had a lovely day to go down to the river bank where Willie, our Clyde River Foundation Scientist, helped us to safely set our little finned friends free!

A huge thank you to Jannie Joe and Jannie Charlie who have been amazing over the past 6 weeks and have been doing the weekend ice pack changes to keep our water cold. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Clyde in the Classroom update – P5D

February 22, 2018 by Mrs De Rosa | 5 Comments

We had a visit yesterday from Willie, our visiting scientist for Clyde in the Classroom. He checked our hatchery and was really impressed with how well our fish are being looked after! Out of 200 eggs that were given to us we have around 193 that have hatched and are now classed as alevins. We have been learning about the life cycle of the brown trout and are now waiting until they develop and grow before they can be released into a local river.

Have a look at the video of our alevins, you should notice that they huddle together around the pebbles to hide. This is because in the wild they are in reds under the stones and don’t like light. Willie told us that the scientific term for this is negatively phototactic.

Clyde in the Classroom – P5D

February 7, 2018 by Mrs De Rosa | 0 comments

Primary 5 D have begun the Clyde in the Classroom project this term with the arrival of 200 brown trout eggs to look after for the next 4-5 weeks. We were so excited when they arrived and couldn’t believe they were so small!! We have been working hard to regulate the temperature in the hatchery using frozen bottles of water to replicate the water temperature in their natural environment, this is harder than it sounds. We learned how to read a thermometer so that we can keep the temperature around 8 degrees Celsius. So far all of our eggs are still alive but none have hatched yet. We will keep you posted on their progress!!

P5D – SSPCA Visit

February 7, 2018 by Mrs De Rosa | 0 comments

Today P5D had a visit from the SSPCA. We learned about the role of the SSPCA officers who help to rescue animals that are neglected, abused or abandoned. The SSPCA help to rescue, rehabilitate, release or rehome domestic, farm and wild animals. During the workshop we watched video clips, asked questions about the types of animals rescued and also took part in a quiz to test our knowledge.

I enjoyed the wildlife game because it taught us some interesting animal facts – Aylajean

The video clips told us about the role of the SSPCA and how we can contact them if an animal needs help – Guy

I learned that the SSPCA care for animals that are neglected, abused or abandoned – Corin

Bridges for Schools -Group 2

November 8, 2017 by Mrs De Rosa | 0 comments

The girls from P5D had a super time learning all about Civil Engineering from the team from BAM Nuttall.

Devyn – I learned about the different things that Civil Engineers build. I enjoyed being the Quantity Surveyor during our task as I got to be in charge of the money! I also liked attaching the cables of the bridge.

Katie – I learned that you don’t have to be physically strong to be a Civil Engineer but you do need to have a strong mind. I liked being the Project Manager because I got to tell people what to do which was fun.

Hannah – I was happy that we worked as a team and actually managed to build a bridge that we could walk across!

Lauryn – I enjoyed working with my team to connect all the boards together.
