Primary 6 Term 1 Curriculum Letter

Primary 6 parent letter

Dear parent/guardian,

I hope you all had a lovely summer holiday. I can’t quite believe that another school year is upon us but we cannot wait to get started here in Primary 6. This is an important year for the children with them making the Sacrament of Confirmation, becoming full members of the church. Here is a brief overview of what your child will be learning in Term 1.

Literacy

The children will work through the North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy Programme for Spelling, Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening. They will be given new words weekly and will complete active tasks within the class and at home. During this first term the class will complete a modelling block. The novel this term will be ‘Saving Finnegan’ by Sally Grindley and this will enable them to revise the comprehension strategies, ensuring that they are confident in the layout of these. I will also give the children a homereader and this should be read every night to develop fluency and encourage reading for enjoyment. We will also be continuing with the ‘Big Writing’ programme throughout the school. The children will be asked to prepare a solo talk on a topic of their choice at some point this term too.

Numeracy

In Term 1 we will be looking at Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Length and Weight, Symmetry and Length and Area using the Pathways Programme. The children will have the opportunity to learn these skills and concepts through a mixture of both active and written tasks with assessments at the end of each topic. Number Talks will be the starter activity of every maths lesson to ensure that the children’s mental agility is of a high standard.

Health and Wellbeing

Health and Wellbeing will be taught across the curriculum. This term we will be studying bullying, where the children will learn about the effects and consequences. Additionally, the children will also explore Growth Mindset through a series of lessons designed to change their mindset and develop their self-belief, resulting in a more positive approach to their learning and well-being. The P.E days this year for Primary 6 are Mondays and Thursdays. We have been lucky enough to have been chosen as one of the classes who will receive lessons from a specialist. The specialist will be in taking the children every Monday for their P.E lesson and I will take the lesson on Thursdays. We will be focusing on fitness this term, with the children looking at ways in which they can increase their fitness levels. Could you please ensure that your child brings their full P.E kit in every Monday to remain in school until the end of the week.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Our I.D.L theme for this term is ‘Climate Change’. It will have a particular focus on Social Studies, Science, Expressive Arts and Technologies. The children will be exploring the concept of climate change including what is the cause and effect of it, global warming, local and regional impact and how we can help reduce our involvement in climate change itself. There will be a particular focus on what we do here at St Brendan’s to overcome this global problem. Our Science focus for this term is Planet Earth and this will be combined with our IDL theme as it links in well. The children will also carry out an investigation on ‘The Water Cycle’ to link in with this theme further.

R.E

We will be continuing with the ‘This Is Our Faith’ programme this term. Primary 6 will explore The Kingdom of God, Mary and Justice and Peace. We will also be expecting all of the children to sing out well during mass, acting as good role models for the younger children.

There has been a change in the homework tasks for this year. The children will be asked to complete one active and one written spelling task per week, assigned maths work on Sumdog and any reading chapters that are given. I would appreciate your support in ensuring that children carry out all of these homework tasks.

If you have any queries don’t hesitate to use your child’s diary as a means of contact with myself. Thank you in advance for all of your support this year.

Many Thanks

Mrs O’Donnell and Primary 3

September 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope everyone had a lovey summer break. I am delighted to welcome the children back to the new school year and I look forward to the exciting year ahead. This is a brief outline of the work which we will be undertaking within the class during Term 1.

 Literacy

The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme in spelling and phonics. They will learn a new sound and a different set of common words every week and this will be consolidated through class work and homework. As part of the reading programme the children will read one or two books per week with associated writing tasks in class to develop their comprehension skills. It is important that the children bring their books into school daily to ensure they are able to use them to carry out their tasks. Within Big Writing the children will be writing narrative and instructional genres.

Numeracy

In Primary 3 we have been focusing our learning on planning the year. The children have shown a good understanding of the days of the week and months of the year.  The children will also develop their understanding of place value, estimating and rounding and addition and subtraction in this first term. Numeracy work will consist of numerous active tasks along with jotter and textbook work.

Religious Education

During the first term the children will be learning about the Bible being the inspired Word of God and that they should treat it with reverence. Through God’s Beautiful Creation the children will explore God’s natural world and begin to see the wonder and awe in the world around them. We will be learning about the community of the Church and some symbols and rituals in worship.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E. the learning will be focused on Aesthetics. The children will explore and engage in different experiences; individually, with a partner and in a group situation. Please ensure your child brings their P.E. kit to school on a Monday and takes it home on a Friday.

At St Brendan’s instilling all our pupils with a growth mindset has become a key priority therefore we intend to teach the children through a range of resources as part of this term’s Health and Wellbeing.. We wish for all of our pupils to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes as part of the learning process, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others. This will help them to achieve, not only with us, but also in their future lives as adults.

 Social Subjects

In term 1 the children will be exploring the IDL of Scotland, within their learning they will explore famous Scottish Landmarks and local landscapes’. In the classroom play corner the children will have a tourist office where they will have regular opportunities for purposeful play. This IDL will allow for research through ICT and the use of IPad’s and computers in school, as well as opportunities to learn some Scottish music and dancing.

Thank you in advance for your support this term, please use your child’s behaviour diary to communicate any concerns/comments.

Kind Regards,

Mrs O’Donnell

Term 4 Update from Primary 5

Primary 5 have settled in well this Term after the Easter break. The children are really enthusiastic about their Science topic Forces, Electricity and Waves. So far the children have enjoyed learning about how electricity is generated, safety with electricity and making an electrical circuit. The children have learned through playing by using the game Operation. The children tried various materials to test what would allow the electricity to pass through. They discovered that wood and plastic (insulators) do not allow the electricity to pass through although metal (conductor) does. The children learned the symbols for electrical components and they worked cooperatively to create a circuit with a light and one with a buzzer.

Primary 5 again worked cooperatively whilst participating in our Outdoor Learning activity. Groups were created randomly where the children had to work cooperatively and use quality communication to complete their task. The children had to design, resource and build an assault course within the senior yard. Using their communication skills they then had to teach another group how to complete their assault course. Happily the children succeeded in their task and they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Look out for our pictures on Twitter.
