Term 2 in Primary 2

Dear Parent/Guardian,

After a busy first term, Primary 2 have enjoyed their first few weeks back after a well-earned October break and are once again ready for another busy term. Here is a brief overview of the learning which will be taking place in our Primary 2 class during term two.

Literacy

We will continue to follow North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy programme for spelling and phonics. Children will learn new sounds and words each week and this will be consolidated through class work and homework. The new phonemes for this term include: ue, aw, oi, au, ew, ow and ou. For reading, the children will continue to read two books per week. I would be grateful if you would continue to support reading at home and ensure that your child brings their book into school each day. Mrs Docherty will be developing children’s grammar skills on a Tuesday. In taught writing the children will begin to work with myself as they continue to develop their skills in narrative writing and explore writing instructions.

Numeracy

This term numeracy will continue to be taught actively through stories, games and number rhymes. The children will also be continuing to develop their ability to recognise, sequence and write numbers to 100, while exploring numbers before/ after/ in-between/ largest/ smallest. Alongside this we will be focusing on the following key areas of numeracy: addition and subtraction of numbers 0 to 20, properties of 2D and 3D shapes, measure focusing on length and area, angles and symmetry.

Interdisciplinary Learning

This term we have two mini topics which will be used as a context for our learning. The first topic we are exploring this term is the story ‘Elmer’. This topic will develop the children’s skills of sequencing a story with lots of discussions being focused around the character and setting. This topic will also link with our focus in R.E, which explores what makes us unique through a range of active activities and discussions.

Our second topic used as a context for our learning will be our topic ‘Winter’. For this, we will be learning about our different types of houses and who might live in them around the world through a Christmas theme about Santa visiting different houses. As part of our topic we will also look at the weather in different parts of the world during winter and compare it with the weather here in Motherwell. The children are excited about our new role play area that will shortly be set up in the classroom which will run alongside our topic.

Science

Science this term will be run alongside our IDL topics where we will explore the different body parts of animals as well discussing our own body by exploring the human skeleton and the major organs. The children will learn what the purpose and function of these are and why they are important. Through this topic the children will also develop an understanding of our senses and their reliability and limitations through some fun practical experiments through our winter topic.

Health & Wellbeing

PE this term will continue to be on a Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon. The children will be working on the topic ‘dance’, which will develop their skills of space, direction and performance. Primary 2 will also continue to work with P.E students from Motherwell College during their Tuesday P.E session and they will be developing a range of skills and techniques.

This term Mrs Docherty be exploring the theme of ‘Included’. This aims to help children identify what makes them unique and to learn how to value themselves and others, which will tie in nicely with our R.E and IDL topic.

Religious Education

This term we will be focussing on the themes ‘My Uniqueness’ and ‘Advent’. Mrs Docherty will be exploring ‘Other World Religions’ additionally throughout this term.

Thank you for your support.

Primary 7/6 Term Letter

Primary 7/6 Parent Letter

I can’t quite believe Term 2 is upon us already. Time clearly flies when you’re learning and having fun. I hope you all had a lovely and relaxing October break! We have lots happening in Term 2 with St Andrew’s Day coming up and the Christmas Carol Service. This overview briefly explains what your children will be covering in this term.

Literacy

The children will continue with the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme for Spelling, Reading, Writing and Talking & Listening in Term 2. They will be covering 1 fiction novel this term, along with some non-fiction work. We will be continuing with the same comprehension strategies, gaining confidence in these as the term progresses. We will also be continuing with the Big Writing programme, implementing these techniques to help improve the standard of the children’s story writing. The children will receive new spelling words weekly and will complete active tasks within the class and at home.

Numeracy

In Term 2 we will be looking at Addition & Subtraction, Money, Time, Multiplication & Division and Multiples, Factors & Primes. Again, we will be using the Active Heinemann along with the Teejay Programme. The children’s arithmetic and times tables will be practised mentally each day. I would encourage that all children keep practising their timetables at home as these are crucial in the topics that we are covering this term. I have introduced the ‘Daily Rigour’ online task to develop the children’s problem-solving skills, challenging them in a different way. Furthermore, the children will take part in the Number Talks programme stating their thinking of mental strategies and learning from others.

Health and Wellbeing

During Health and Wellbeing this term the children will be learning about food and diets. I am also implementing a 6-week Growth Mindset programme for the children. Through this they will learn how to change their mindset to a more positive way of thinking. During P.E. the children will be covering aesthetics, focussing on dance and will also get sessions from the college students on a Tuesday. Their P.E. days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Could you please ensure that your child brings in their full P.E. kit every Monday to remain in school until the end of the week.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Our IDL theme for Term 2 is ‘Mary Queen of Scots’. It will have a particular focus on Social Studies, Expressive Arts and Technologies. The children will be exploring who she was, her family tree, when she lived, a timeline of important events she was involved in and Lord Darnley. In science, we will be studying the Materials with a focus on ‘dissolving’.

R.E.

The Primary 7/6 children have now had the experience of leading First Thursday mass in Term 1. They showed confidence and maturity when doing so and will be given more opportunities this term. Through the “This is Our Faith” programme the children will explore Scottish/Celtic heritage, The Faithful Departed, Justice and Peace and Advent.

If you have any queries don’t hesitate to use your child’s diary as a means of contact with myself.

Thank you again for all of you support this year.

Many Thanks,

Miss Mitchell

Primary 4/3 Term 2 Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

After a well-earned October break the Primary 4/3 children are working hard and looking forward to a busy and productive term ahead. Here is a brief overview of some of the learning experiences planned for this term:

Literacy

All children will be continuing to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme to support their learning in spelling, phonics, reading and writing.

Red

To develop further their accuracy in writing, children will begin to focus closely on the different representations of phonemes in addition to learning new strategies and rules for spelling. Furthermore, they will undertake a novel study of the text ‘The Best Dog in the World’ and a non-fiction text.

Blue & Green

To develop their phonological knowledge and spelling, children will continue to be introduced to a new sound and set of common words each week. Words and sounds will be consolidated through work in class and our active/written homework programme. They will continue to build their fluency and comprehension skills in reading by working with banded books in class and at home.

Writing

This term we will focus on the genres of instructions and narrative and children will apply their knowledge about ‘It’s a Bug’s Life’ our interdisciplinary topic.

Numeracy

In numeracy, children will continue to extend their knowledge of number with a specific focus on addition and subtraction.  Circles will work with numbers to 1000 and squares will work with numbers to 100.  The children will develop their mental agility through Number Talks and will be given opportunities to work collaboratively. The children have been working on measure (length and area) with Mrs McLauchlan and are looking forward to moving on to develop their knowledge of shape.

R.M.E.

During the month of November children will learn about eternal life and will remember and pray for those who have died.  They will extend their knowledge of Advent and the Christmas story, identifying signs and symbols linked to the liturgical season.

Health & Wellbeing

A reminder that PE for Primary 4/3 will take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday. We would encourage the children to bring their full P.E. kit into school on a Monday and take it home on the Friday. All items of children’s kit should be clearly labelled with their name and class. This term, Primary 4/3 are fortunate to have NL students conducting PE lessons and activities with them on a Wednesday. On Thursday PE lessons we will focus on gymnastics and dance. The children will also learn the importance of healthy bodies through food and exercise.

Interdisciplinary Learning

This term our interdisciplinary learning will focus on ‘It’s a Bug’s Life’. The children will explore the features of our local landscape, identify a variety of food chains, identify and name a variety of minibeasts and categorise minibeasts. We can’t wait to get our hands dirty and build bug hotels for the minibeasts in our area.

Thank you for all your continued support and if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks,

Miss Peattie
