Primary 4 Term 1 Update

We can’t believe it is the end of Term 1 already!  We have had a fun, busy term settling into our new class and developing our skills across the curriculum.  We have been exploring growth mind-set and examining the importance of a growth mind-set in achieving success.  Through our topic ‘The Secret to Success’ we have considered what it means to be successful and researched the lives of people from the past and present who have overcome a range of barriers to achieve great success.  We have created interesting fact files and applied the technique of pointillism to create paintings of Mickey Mouse.   Furthermore, we have enjoyed deepening our understanding of the life of Thomas Edison through acting out events in his life during drama lessons.  We are looking forward to working collaboratively and employing a growth mind-set to complete a STEM challenge after the October holiday.

Primary 6 Curriculum Letter

Dear parent/guardian,

It is a tremendous honour to welcome all of you to our Primary 6 class for this year! Trusting that you all had a wonderful summer, we have spent the first few weeks getting reacquainted with one another and creating relationships with our new peers…and teacher. See below for an outline of what your child will be learning in Term 1.

Numeracy

Every numeracy lesson will begin with a Number Talks starter activity, which will present the children with the opportunity to further enhance their mental agility. Following the school’s Pathways programme, the class will look at Place Value; Length and Area; Addition and Subtraction; and Money. The children will be provided with a range of active and written tasks to enable them to learn these skills, with each topic being assessed.

Literacy

Continuing on from their excellent work in Primary 5, the children will work through the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy programme across all areas within literacy: Spelling, Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening. New spelling words will be given on a weekly basis, with the children working through a variety of tasks both in the classroom and at home. A modelling block will take place through Term 1, using a well-loved novel within school titled “Saving Finnegan” by Sally Grindley. We will take the modelling opportunity to revise our comprehension strategies. The “Big Writing” area of the curriculum will start this term with Mrs McLaughlin, who will be with the class on Thursdays.

Health and Wellbeing

Like many areas, Health and Wellbeing will be taught throughout the breadth of the curriculum. For this term, we will look to focus on a series of lessons on Growth Mindset. A big push across the entire school, the lessons will provide the children the chance to challenge their own mindsets and grow their self-belief. For Primary 6, our P.E days will be Monday and Thursday of this year. We will be looking to start with Basketball this term, looking to develop our ability to receive and distribute the ball effectively with teammates. We will also be looking to improve our ability to use movement effectively to create space and attacking opportunities! If children could be reminded to bring in P.E kit on a Monday of every week, to remain in class for the week, that would be appreciated.

Interdisciplinary Learning (I.D.L)

Our I.D.L theme for this term is “Enterprise”. This topic provides a wealth of opportunity to interact with Social Studies, Technologies and a wide range of other curricular areas. We will look at the “ins and outs” of a business, focusing on how different functions interact with one another. We will conduct forms of market research within the school to help us launch a class pop-up shop, using our knowledge of Budgeting, Profit and Loss to run a successful day of trading. Any profit we make will be used to purchase something of worth to our class. We will look to tie in a Topical Science focus, looking at how scientific advancements have changed the face of business and still impact on its success today.

R.E

This term, we will be further exploring the “This Is Our Faith” programme. We will look to refresh our memories by looking different areas such as Prayer, the Bible and Jesus’s divinity. We will also study Justice and Peace and look at our Scottish/Celtic Catholic Faith Heritage. Given our responsibility as role models as senior pupils within the school, the children will be expected to sing out well when attending Mass.

Homework

This term, we will look to support our learning from class through homework. I would appreciate the support in making sure that children keep up with these.

I am keen to have an open dialogue throughout the year as a class community of pupils, families and myself. With that in mind, please do not hesitate to reach out by popping a note in your child’s diary for me. I thank you, in advance, for all the support this year.

Primary 7 Curriculum Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We hope you all had a wonderful summer! Primary 7 will be a year filled with lots of excitement and opportunity as the children begin their transition to secondary school, enjoy the adventure of Kilbowie and take on various opportunities for responsibility.

This letter will provide you with a brief overview of the learning that will take place this term in Primary 7 and provide you with an insight into your child’s learning journey. We look forward to the year ahead as the Primary 7 teachers.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy programme for Spelling, Reading, Writing and Listening and Talking. This programme will help to develop further their literacy skills and provide exciting and new challenges.

The children will take part in a whole class novel study to reintroduce them to the Active Literacy Reading Strategies. The novel this term will be ‘Carrie’s War’. The text will be read in class with the children to model reading skills. In addition to this, the children will have a home reader of their choice and this should be read each night to develop fluency and encourage reading for enjoyment.

Numeracy

This term Primary 7 will explore place value, addition and subtraction, measurement (length and area) and angles, symmetry and transformation. The children will have the opportunity to learn these skills and concepts through a mixture of both active and written tasks. This will enable the children to apply their learning across contexts and see a real purpose to their learning.

The children will also continue to take part in ‘Number Talks’. ‘Number Talks’ encourage children to talk about their learning and the strategies the children have used to solve problems mentally. This helps to develop the children’s mental math and computation strategies. This will not only help serve as a system of checks and balances for accuracy but also help the children to develop and maintain flexibility in thinking about numbers.

Health and Wellbeing

Health and Wellbeing will be taught across the curriculum. This term in Physical Education the children will develop their skills in Athletics. They will challenge themselves to increase their stamina, develop their spatial awareness and improve their overall fitness levels. The children will also explore Growth Mind-set through a series of lessons designed to challenge their mind-set and develop their self-belief, resulting in a more positive approach to their learning and well-being.

Interdisciplinary Learning

The children of Primary 7 will be exploring the theme of ‘Slavery’ with a focus on the Transatlantic Slave Trade this term. Various elements will be examined such as the Atlantic Passage, Life as a Slave, Impact on Britain and the Abolition Movement. The children will apply their learning across the curriculum with a particular focus within the curriculum areas of Social Studies, Expressive Arts and Technologies.

Science

This term, the children of Primary 7 will examine Biodiversity and Interdependence. They will explore this theme through the classification of living things and animals through the knowledge of their characteristics. The children will also begin to construct and use simple branch keys to identify particular plants and animals, and describe how some plants and animals have adapted to their environment.

Religious Education

Religious Education will be taught through the ‘This Is Our Faith’ programme. This term Primary 7 will explore Scottish/Celtic faith heritage with a focus on their Christian heritage and communities care for the world. The children will also explore Creation and Science and begin to examine the link between these and the stories of creation taken from the bible. Additionally, the children will examine Paul and Pilgrimage through the journey of St. Paul’s life before and after his conversion.

Homework

The children’s homework will help to support their on-going classwork and I would appreciate your support in ensuring the children keep up with all homework tasks.

Many thanks,

Mrs Williamson and Miss McShane
