St Brendan’s Weekly News

Welcome back to our Weekly Blog with our exciting news and learning experiences from our pupils.

Take a look at the exciting learning experiences our pupils have been involved in over the past week!

Primary 7 High School Visit

Primary 7 pupils enjoyed an exciting two-day visit this week to Our Lady’s High School, giving them a valuable glimpse into what life will be like next year. During their visit, they took part in a range of engaging lessons, met some of their future teachers, and explored the school’s facilities. Here is what some of our Primary 7 pupils thought about their visit:

Melody – “My favourite parts of the Our Lady’s two-day visit was music, social studies, art and home economics. These two days were packed with numerous subjects and activities within all the classes. Luckily, I was with a range of my best friends, Susanna for all my classes and my other best friend Carly was in my house, Marian. I had the opportunity to make brand new friends and vote for a new house name! my experience was fabulous, and I can’t wait to start high school in August!”

Conall – “In high school my favourite thing was the different subjects. In science we got to do 3 experiments and in art we got to create our own cereal boxes. Also, in ICT we got to go on google maps and take screenshots of famous landmarks.”

Susanna – “My favourite part of Our Lady’s two-day trip was art, ICT and home economics. In art I really liked it because we got to make our own kind of cereal and design our own colourful box for the cereal. I liked ICT because we got to learn a bunch of new shortcuts and tricks on the computer and play around on google maps. I liked home economics because we got to do word searches and there was a picture of a kitchen which we had to find the dangerous things and how to make it safer.”

Lucas – “My favourite subject at the high school was art and I loved winning the big football game at the football pitch”.

Hamish – “I liked walking to the high school and my favourite subject was art.”

Jessica – “My favourite part of the high school was art because you got to make your own cereal box. I liked this because it gave you a lot of freedom in the creative department.”

Charlie – “My favourite memory in Our Lady’s was music, art, maths and home economics. I also liked making new friends and it will be a moment that I will remember forever.”

It certainly seems the experience helped ease any nerves and sparked enthusiasm as our pupils look forward to starting their high school journey.

Boys Football Tournament

On Friday 9th May, our boys’ football team took part in a tournament at Taylor High School and delivered an outstanding performance. They went undefeated across seven matches, securing six impressive wins and one draw. Their hard work, teamwork, and determination paid off as they were crowned tournament champions. Congratulations, boys – we are incredibly proud of your achievement!

Evening Rosary at Carfin Grotto

Last night, pupils from our school had the honour of leading the evening Rosary alongside Father Grant at Carfin Grotto, bringing together pupils, staff, families, and members of the wider community in a beautiful moment of prayer and reflection. It was a peaceful and spiritually uplifting evening, with everyone joining in devotion during the month of Our Blessed Lady under the serene surroundings of the Grotto. We are proud of our school community for representing St Brendan’s with reverence and unity.

Readers of the month

This week, several pupils were proudly presented with the Reader of the Month award in recognition of their enthusiasm, effort, and progress in reading. This celebration not only highlights a love for books and learning but also encourages positivity and perseverance among all our pupils. We are delighted to see their confidence grow and hope their achievements inspire others to develop a lifelong passion for reading. Well done to all our fantastic readers!

Well done to the following pupils:

Cormac (Primary 1)

Toryn (Primary 2)

Miller (Primary 2)

Kendal (Primary 3/2)

Adam (Primary 3)

Sylwia (Primary 5/4)

Melody (Primary 7/6)

Mary’s Meals

This week, we were privileged to welcome a representative from Mary’s Meals to our school assembly, where they shared the incredible work that they do to support children around the world by providing daily meals in schools. Their message was both inspiring and eye-opening, helping our pupils understand the impact of kindness, generosity, and global solidarity. As part of their visit, they asked us to keep their mission in our thoughts and to offer prayers through the Holy Rosary to support the continued success of their work particularly during the month of May. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn more about this vital cause.

Nursery

Our nursery has been full of excitement and curiosity this week as the children have been busy learning about planting and growing. They’ve enjoyed getting their hands dirty while exploring how seeds develop into plants, gaining a hands-on understanding of nature. This month’s story focus has been The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which has sparked wonderful conversations and activities around life cycles and the changes that living things go through. It’s been a fun and educational time, full of discovery and learning!

St Brendan’s Weekly News

Welcome back to our Weekly Blog with our exciting news and learning experiences from our pupils.

Take a look at the exciting learning experiences our pupils have been involved in over the past week!

Habemus Papum!

Everyone at St. Brendan’s Primary would like to pray for our new Pope Leo XIV.

Faithful God,
You guide us on the path of life
and your goodness is our constant companion.

Be with our new Shepherd, Pope Leo XIV,
in his service of the Church.
Fill him with the power of your Spirit,
the peace of your presence
and the compassion of Christ.

May he walk with you,
in wisdom and humility,
and lead us, together with all God’s people,
to embody your love for the world.
Amen.

Month of Mary – May Devotions

To mark the start of May, to honour our Blessed Mother our pupils alongside their teachers have been participating in praying a decade of the rosary daily.

We ask you to remember our Blessed Mother Mary in praying the May devotions.

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee;

blessed art thou among women and

blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

An invitation is extended to all our St Brendan’s community as our school leads the evening rosary in Carfin Grotto on Thursday 15th of May at 8pm. We would love to see you there to gather in prayer.

In-service Day – Pilgrimage

To mark the theme for Jubilee 2025: “Pilgrims of hope” our staff gathered alongside St. Bernadette’s Primary school at Carfin Grotto on Tuesday afternoon. During the Jubilee year, everyone at St. Brendan’s will be taking inspiration from the late Holy Father Pope Francis’ prayer intentions, looking for signs of hope in all corners and aspects of our faith life and our global Church.

We gathered in the glass chapel for a lovely service from Father Paul Denney of St James’, Coatbridge.

Wear Yellow Walk

Pupils returned to Strathclyde Park full of energy and enthusiasm for our annual Wear Yellow Walk, taking on one lap around the loch in support of St. Andrew’s Hospice. Dressed brightly in yellow, they walked together in the sunshine, showing community spirit and raising awareness with every step. It was a joyful and memorable day for everyone involved.

EuroQuiz

Euroquiz is an annual project open to all P6 pupils across Scotland. This week our team from St. Brendan’s took part in a team of four working together to broaden their knowledge of Europe and the wider world. Subjects covered include languages, history, geography, culture and European affairs.

Stay tuned to find out how our pupils got on and if we manage to progress to the National Euroquiz Final in June.

Weekly Blog WB 28th April

St Brendan’s Weekly News

Welcome back to our Weekly Blog with our exciting news and learning experiences from our pupils.

Take a look at the exciting learning experiences our pupils have been involved in over the past two weeks!

Remembering Pope Francis

At school, we have been spending time reflecting on the life and legacy of the late Pope Francis. Through prayer, discussion, and tasks, we are remembering his deep commitment to peace, compassion, and care for the poor and the environment. His example inspires us to live with greater kindness, humility, and faith, following his call to build a more just and loving world.

Here is some of the tasks we have been working on in class.

Please continue to pray for Pope Francis.

O God, from whom the just receive an unfailing reward,

grant that Your servant Francis, our Pope, whom you made

vicar of Peter and Shepard of your Church,

may rejoice forever in the vision of your glory,

for he was a faithful steward here on earth

of the mysteries of your forgiveness and grace.

Through Christ our Lord.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and

let perpetual light shine upon him.

May he rest in peace.

Amen.

Creating Engineers K’Nex challenge

Last month two of our Primary 6 boys won the Cluster challenge as part of the K’Nex Creating Engineers and yesterday attended the Regional Finals held at the University of the West of Scotland along with other finalists. The competition is designed for pupils to apply teamwork, construction skills, and imagination, by solving set engineering challenges using the construction set K’Nex.

Yesterday pupils were given the challenge of designing a ‘rover’ with rotating wheels and a steering mechanism that NASA can send to the moon. Our boys certainly met the design brief, an incredible creation, well done!

For our boys this was the end of their K’Nex challenge journey.  We are so proud of their achievement and wish all the winning pupils the best of luck in the next round!

Primary 7 Outdoor Discovery Award

Throughout term 3 our Primary 7 pupils took part in ‘The Outdoor Discovery Award’ This award is a National Navigation Award. Pupils completed a series of tasks and activities within the school and local community to achieve a level 1 award. Pupils developed the valuable skills of drawing a map, following a map, map scales, map symbols. Pupils had super opportunities to work collaboratively with their peers and discover and explore an outdoor space. Here they are enjoying a little treat down Barons Haugh to celebrate their success of completing the award. Well done!

First Holy Communion Preparation

Our Primary 4 children have been busy preparing for their First Holy Communion by taking part in a special role play of the Last Supper. Through this meaningful activity, they gained a deeper understanding of the events of Holy Thursday and the importance of the Eucharist. It was a wonderful way for them to connect with the story of Jesus and reflect on the significance of receiving Holy Communion for the first time.

Outdoor Classroom

We are excited to announce that construction has begun on our new outdoor classroom! This wonderful new space will provide students with opportunities to learn, explore, and connect with nature in a fresh and inspiring environment. We look forward to seeing how this outdoor area will enhance learning across all areas of the curriculum.

Primary 5/4 and 4 KAPLA creations

This week our Primary 5/4 and 4 children have been working hard to build authentic Roman bathhouses. Using the KAPLA blocks pupils explored the ancient architecture of the Roman world. Through teamwork and problem-solving, the pupils collaborated to recreate the intricate designs and functionality of a Roman bathhouse — complete with pools, saunas, and open-air courtyards. Pupils demonstrated their knowledge regarding the functionalities of each room through discussion with their peers and teachers and how each room was used in the Roman times!

First Lego League Explore

Last month our staff participated in a Twilight digital training session with Colin Dornan and Lisa Carrol from the Digital School who offered training on First Lego League Challenges.

These challenges allow our pupils to be introduced to the fundamentals of STEM while working together to solve fun challenges and building models using LEGO® DUPLO® bricks.

In FIRST ® LEGO® League Explore, our pupils will focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO® bricks and powered by LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Essential.

FIRST LEGO League Explore is one of three divisions by age group of the FIRST LEGO League program. This program inspires young people to experiment and grow their confidence, critical thinking, and design skills through hands-on learning.

This week, Mr Dornan dropped off our Lego League Submerged Kits to Primary 4. We are so excited to start our LEGO League challenge.

Mrs Oates and Miss Mitchell present for Learning, Teaching and Assessment

On Tuesday of this week Mrs Oates presented at the Learning Teaching and Assessment Conference at ‘’. At this event Mrs Oates had the opportunity to share and discuss good practice in planning and tracking within the Early Years and play environments.

On Wednesday of this week Miss Mitchell also had the opportunity to present at Noble Primary for ‘Learning, Teaching and Assessment’. Miss Mitchell shared St. Brendan’s learning, teaching and assessment journey over the past few years. Miss Mitchell was able to share our school’s good practice of our inward and outward approaches of:

  • High Quality Assessment of moderation in all curriculum subjects across all stages.
  • Enquiry based approaches of our teachers to improve learning and teaching within our school environment.
  • Designing progressive learning pathways for our learners in line with Curriculum for Excellence.
  • Writing moderation and verification at a school and cluster level.
  • Up to date assessment folders for monitoring and tracking of pupils within our school.
  • Participation of ‘The West Partnership’ of high-quality assessment.

Assembly Awards

At this week’s assembly, we were thrilled to celebrate our pupils’ outstanding achievements as they received awards for being successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors, and responsible citizens. These awards recognise pupils who have shown exceptional effort in class, demonstrated confidence in new challenges, contributed positively to school life, and acted responsibly within the school community. It was inspiring to see their hard work, determination, and kindness being celebrated. Congratulations to all our award winners—you truly embody the values we strive for every day here in St. Brendan’s.
