Primary 6 Class Blog

After a fantastic first term in Primary 6, the children have returned from the October Week full of enthusiasm and ready to embrace the exciting opportunities and challenges that Term 2 has in store. Their commitment to learning continues to shine across all areas of the curriculum. Throughout Term 1, the children displayed a positive attitude and embraced a growth mindset. It’s been wonderful to see their independence and sense of responsibility flourish as the children begin to take greater ownership of their learning.

Our Learning So Far

Literacy

The children have been engaging with the Active Literacy spelling programme. They have been exploring root words alongside prefixes and suffixes, focusing on both their meanings and spellings. The children are also applying a range of spelling strategies to tackle common and tricky words, while learning to identify and differentiate between homophones and other commonly confused words. In addition, some children have been investigating phoneme families and discovering the different ways the same sound can be represented. In reading, the class have been applying the comprehension strategies to a wide range of non-fiction texts linked to their IDL topic, Sustainability. They have recorded notes in different formats by listening to and watching audio-visual texts. Working in pairs and groups, the children have extracted key ideas from written texts by using tools such as the contents page, glossary and index to locate important information. They showed great enthusiasm when using the Digital Den to carry out independent research with reliable websites and enjoyed applying their design skills to present their findings in creative and engaging ways. In writing, the children have been developing their character and setting descriptions by applying their grammar knowledge to include powerful adjectives and adverbs. These rich vocabulary choices are helping to bring their stories to life and make their writing more vivid and engaging. As a proud Reading School, we’re committed to nurturing a lifelong love of books and celebrating reading as a central part of our learning journey. Our children have thoroughly enjoyed choosing and reading books for pleasure in the school library, where their enthusiasm for stories continues to grow with every visit.

Maths and Numeracy

In Maths and Numeracy, the children have deepened their understanding of place value by exploring the value of digits up to 100,000. They’ve practised reading, partitioning, and writing these large numbers in different ways, and have confidently compared and ordered numbers within this range. This week, they’ve enjoyed diving into their new topic, Multiplication and Division, through a variety of fun and interactive activities designed to build fluency and accuracy with times tables, helping them tackle related problems with confidence. During Number Talks, learners have grown more assured in using a range of addition strategies and applying them to differentiated chilli challenges. Many have shown great skill in explaining their thinking and sharing strategies with their peers. The focus this week has shifted to subtraction, where the children have been introduced to the ‘Adding Up’ strategy and are beginning to use a range of mental methods with increasing confidence.

Learning across the curriculum

As part of their IDL topic Sustainability, Primary 6 have been developing a deeper understanding of the environmental challenges facing our world today. They began by investigating the role of fossil fuels, learning about how they are formed, their widespread use and the negative impact they have on the planet. Building on this, the children explored renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro power, discussing why these alternatives are vital for a more sustainable future. Climate change was another key focus, with pupils researching its causes and effects through a variety of sources including audio-visual materials, written texts and reliable websites. Working in pairs and small groups, the children recorded detailed notes in different formats and used these to create extended pieces of writing, such as information reports and explanation texts. They also applied their digital skills to design PowerPoint presentations, showcasing their findings in creative and informative ways. This cross-curricular learning has helped them build research, collaboration and communication skills while developing a strong awareness of their role in protecting the environment.

In Health and Wellbeing, Primary 6 have been learning about emotions through the Emotion Works programme. They’ve developed a strong understanding of how emotions connect to body sensations, behaviours, and triggers, and have expanded their vocabulary when discussing how they feel. The class also explored the concept of Growth Mindset, identifying their own strengths and areas for development. Many pupils were able to reflect on how different mindsets influence their learning and progress. As part of their learning, the children discussed what makes an effective teacher and created thoughtful descriptions of their ‘perfect teacher’. They also enjoyed investigating the Iceberg Illusion, identifying the hidden qualities such as effort, perseverance, and resilience that contribute to success.

In P.E, the children been working hard to improve their fitness and stamina through a variety of athletics and football activities. They took part in the bleep test, challenging themselves to pace their movement and build endurance. The high jump was a particular favourite, as they challenged themselves to improve their technique, coordination and confidence with each attempt. Relay races brought out their competitive spirit, and it was lovely to see them encouraging one another and showing great teamwork. In football, the children have been developing their dribbling, passing and shooting skills with growing control and accuracy. They’ve shown strong team spirit during small-sided games, working cooperatively and using effective communication to support one another on the pitch.

In RE, Primary 6 began by learning about the liturgical colours used throughout the Church year, exploring their meanings and the key dates and seasons they represent. They have since been learning about the concept of Covenant and its importance in the relationship between God and His people. Through key stories from the Old Testament such as Noah, Abraham, and Moses, the children have explored how these covenants were formed and what they reveal about faith, trust and commitment. They have reflected on the promises made by God and the responsibilities taken on by His people, making thoughtful connections to their own values and choices. This learning has helped deepen their understanding of God’s love and guidance throughout scripture.

The children recently enjoyed their second Skills Academy, which focused on developing the meta skill of integrity. Through engaging activities in Design and Manufacture, Creativity, Community, Life Skills and Food Technology, the children explored what it means to act in a way that is honest, fair and true to their values. They practised communicating in different ways, listened to others’ stories and viewpoints and reflected on how their actions can affect those around them. The sessions encouraged kindness, curiosity and self-awareness, helping the children recognise and celebrate both their own uniqueness and that of others.

A fantastic first term!

This week in St Brendan’s

Parent and Carers Evening

A big thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our first Parents evening of the year. It was lovely to see so many of you and to share how well the children are settling into their new classes.

Your support and involvement mean so much and help us ensure every child feels happy, confident and ready to learn. We had a 92.4% turnout of parents and carers attend our settling in evening on Tuesday. If you didn’t manage to make it along on Tuesday evening, please call the school office to arrange an appointment.

We’re excited for the term ahead and appreciate your continued partnership in making our school such a special place!

Primary 4 and 5/4 enjoy a trip to Summerlee!

Our Primary 4 and 5/4 classes had a fantastic day at Summerlee Museum on Wednesday as part of their topic on The Victorians. The trip was a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and experience what life was like over a hundred years ago!

The children had great fun dressing up in Victorian clothesplaying with old-fashioned toys and exploring traditional Victorian homes. One of the highlights of the day was going down into the mines — a real eye-opener into how different working life was for people during that time.

Everyone came away buzzing with excitement (and a bit of coal dust!) after such a memorable, hands-on learning experience. A huge thank you to the staff and helpers who made the visit possible — and to the children for their fantastic enthusiasm and behaviour throughout the day!

Primary 5 Class Blog

Primary 5 have returned from the holidays with fantastic enthusiasm and have fully embraced their learning across all areas of the curriculum. Throughout Term 1, they have demonstrated a positive attitude, strong engagement, and a growing sense of independence and responsibility.

Literacy

In Literacy, the class have been following the NLC Active Literacy Spelling Programme. Working in a four-week cycle, pupils have been learning about different phoneme families, spelling rules, and common and tricky words.

In Reading, we recently completed our whole-class modelling block using the novel The Iron Man, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. They confidently presented tasks that demonstrated their understanding of the text and will now apply these skills to their group novels. The Purple and Green groups are currently exploring non-fiction texts linked to our IDL topic, while the Blue group are engaging with a selection of Rapid Readers, which include both fiction and non-fiction stories.

All children have the opportunity to explore a wide range of books from our class library during soft start and DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time. It is lovely to see their growing confidence and enjoyment in reading, with noticeable improvements in fluency and comprehension.

In Writing, we have focused on narrative storytelling. The children have developed the key building blocks of imaginative writing—starting with characters and setting, then progressing to plot development. They are encouraged to apply grammar knowledge to enhance their stories, particularly through the use of adjectives and adverbs to add detail and engage the reader. We also explored information report writing, linking this to our novel studies and IDL themes.

Numeracy and Maths

In Numeracy, we began the term by consolidating our understanding of place value with numbers up to 10,000. Pupils then developed their addition and subtraction strategies. They have been working hard to recall number bond facts within 20 at speed through competitive and interactive games. These skills have supported their work with larger numbers, including adding and subtracting multiples of ten and one hundred. Strategies used include number lines, making tens, partitioning, and the standard written method. These concepts are regularly reinforced through Number Talks and Daily 10 challenges.

In Maths (non-number), the focus has been on Measurement, specifically length and perimeter. These concepts have been brought to life during outdoor learning sessions, helping pupils to contextualise their understanding and apply it in real-world situations.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL)

Our class topic, We’re All From Somewhere, has provided a meaningful and engaging context for learning. We began by exploring Article 7 of the UNCRC – a child’s right to a name and nationality. Pupils used their knowledge of world flags to design creative nameplates that reflect this right.

We have developed our digital literacy skills by researching terms such as refugee, immigrant, and migrant. Pupils read non-fiction texts sharing real-life stories of people fleeing conflict, deepening their empathy and understanding. Through the novel The Boy at the Back of the Class, we are exploring the thoughts and feelings of children who welcome a refugee peer into their classroom.

As part of this topic, we will explore cross-cultural studies through expressive arts, including drama, dance, and music. The children have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity and are excited to continue discovering new cultures and traditions.

Kodály Music Programme

We are lucky to have Mrs MacGregor visit our class every other Friday to lead Kodály-based music sessions. Through songs, rhymes, and games, the children are developing their musical understanding and confidence.

“I love playing games. Mrs MacGregor teaches the best singing games!” – Laura
“I love the teamwork and learning new games – it gives me courage to try and enjoy new things!” – Thea
“I like that Kodály improves my singing and gives me the courage to take a step further.” – Oliver

Mrs MacGregor also runs the Golden Time Fun Choir Club alongside Mrs MacDermid, which several pupils from our class have joined. We look forward to seeing their performances throughout the school year.

Physical Education (PE)

Primary 5 always approach PE with energy and enthusiasm. This term, our focus has been Athletics. Pupils have developed techniques in various athletic events such as javelin, baton relays, hurdles, high jump, long jump, sprints, and long-distance running.

Weekly team races have encouraged healthy competition, teamwork, and perseverance, all while earning dojo points. We look forward to moving into racquet sports in Term 2.

Religious Education (RE)

The start of the school year provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on our own faith and beliefs. We also began exploring Other World Religions, starting with Judaism. Pupils have compared its key beliefs, traditions, and symbols with those of Christianity, developing a deeper appreciation of diversity and respect for others.

Skills Academy

On Thursday 25th September, we launched our first Skills Academy session of the year. Pupils had the chance to participate in one of the following academies:

Community, Creative, Life Skills, Food & Technology and Design & Manufacture

Our focus this term was Collaboration, and the children thoroughly enjoyed working together across stages, developing valuable skills and forming new friendships.

It has been a fantastic start to the year for Primary 5.

Their enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to learn have been truly commendable. We look forward to an exciting Term 2 with lots more opportunities for growth, challenge, and fun!
