Update from P6/5

Another school year, another set of new challenges! We have all settled in well to our new class and are making new friends and are enjoying the wonderful views from the third floor.

We have been learning about the rainforest so P5’s took the opportunity to visit Baron’s Haugh with Miss Mitchell’s P5s while P6 were having fun in Kodaly with Mrs Wilkinson. We set out to compare our local woods to the Amazon rainforest and found a few similarities such as types of  plants (ferns) that grow in the dark, damp conditions underneath the trees. We also noticed the lack of leaves on the lower branches. One big difference was the lack of colourful parrots in the trees!

P6 had a chance to use our new kitchen with Mrs Young making fruit salads which they shared with the teachers! P5 are now really keen to get their turn to work on delicious recipes.

An Update from Primary 6

A big hello from Primary 6!

We have had a busy first few weeks back at school and are enjoying the challenge of this new and exciting stage in our learning journey at St Brendan’s.

During the first week of term, we worked together in cooperative groups to think about our hopes for this session and what we can all do to make sure we have a happy and successful year together.

We welcomed visitors from the NSPCC – along with their mascot, Buddy – and enjoyed participating in their ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ presentation and workshop, which told us more about our rights as children, how we can keep ourselves safe and who we can speak to about any worries we might have. Thank you, NSPCC!

We have also really enjoyed working with a variety of media to build up a seaside collage, which will remind us of summertime as we move into September! Here we are working with paints.

We will be learning more about the Rainforest this term, so stay tuned for more updates from Primary 6 through our Twitter feed and through the new school app!

An Update from Primary 7

Now that the new term is well underway, Primary 7 are settling into their new roles and responsibilities as senior pupils. The children have worked hard to ensure they are responsible citizens, setting a good example for the rest of the school and showing maturity in their roles as buddies and monitors.

On Friday the 26th of August, Primary 7 were honoured to attend the Year of Mercy Mass at Carfin Grotto. Furthermore, Primary 7 led the First Thursday Mass – we are extremely proud of the maturity shown by Primary 7 at the Beginning of the Year Mass. Well done to everyone in the class for reading well, playing the music and singing out!

Over the past few weeks, Primary 7 have also been exploring key events which took place during the Second World War. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed exploring replicas of letters, posters, ration books and adverts from the war. The children have shown lots of enthusiasm for their recent IDL homework project: to build a model of an Anderson Shelter using recycled materials! As a class, we are all very excited to see what everyone comes up with!
