Primary 4/3 Term 2 Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

After a well-earned October break the Primary 4/3 children are working hard and looking forward to a busy and productive term ahead. Here is a brief overview of some of the learning experiences planned for this term:

Literacy

All children will be continuing to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme to support their learning in spelling, phonics, reading and writing.

Red

To develop further their accuracy in writing, children will begin to focus closely on the different representations of phonemes in addition to learning new strategies and rules for spelling. Furthermore, they will undertake a novel study of the text ‘The Best Dog in the World’ and a non-fiction text.

Blue & Green

To develop their phonological knowledge and spelling, children will continue to be introduced to a new sound and set of common words each week. Words and sounds will be consolidated through work in class and our active/written homework programme. They will continue to build their fluency and comprehension skills in reading by working with banded books in class and at home.

Writing

This term we will focus on the genres of instructions and narrative and children will apply their knowledge about ‘It’s a Bug’s Life’ our interdisciplinary topic.

Numeracy

In numeracy, children will continue to extend their knowledge of number with a specific focus on addition and subtraction.  Circles will work with numbers to 1000 and squares will work with numbers to 100.  The children will develop their mental agility through Number Talks and will be given opportunities to work collaboratively. The children have been working on measure (length and area) with Mrs McLauchlan and are looking forward to moving on to develop their knowledge of shape.

R.M.E.

During the month of November children will learn about eternal life and will remember and pray for those who have died.  They will extend their knowledge of Advent and the Christmas story, identifying signs and symbols linked to the liturgical season.

Health & Wellbeing

A reminder that PE for Primary 4/3 will take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday. We would encourage the children to bring their full P.E. kit into school on a Monday and take it home on the Friday. All items of children’s kit should be clearly labelled with their name and class. This term, Primary 4/3 are fortunate to have NL students conducting PE lessons and activities with them on a Wednesday. On Thursday PE lessons we will focus on gymnastics and dance. The children will also learn the importance of healthy bodies through food and exercise.

Interdisciplinary Learning

This term our interdisciplinary learning will focus on ‘It’s a Bug’s Life’. The children will explore the features of our local landscape, identify a variety of food chains, identify and name a variety of minibeasts and categorise minibeasts. We can’t wait to get our hands dirty and build bug hotels for the minibeasts in our area.

Thank you for all your continued support and if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks,

Miss Peattie

Class Teacher
