Term 4 in Primary 5B

Dear Parent/Carer,

I would like to welcome back all of the children for our final term in Primary 5B – what a quick year! It is sure to be a busy last term with lots for the children to look forward to.

Literacy

In spelling, phonics, reading and writing, the class will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme, spending some time reviewing what they have learned over the course of the year.

During this term, the children will undertake their final novel studies of the year. Titles include ‘Charlottes Web’ and ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. Remember, completing all assigned reading at home is important as this will not only help your child to build fluency, but prepare them for the activities that they will be given in class.

Numeracy

In numeracy, the class will continue to apply what they learn in active and practical ways, experiencing a mix of direct teaching, partner/group activities and written tasks to build and consolidate their understanding of concepts.

This term, the class will explore themes including patterns and data handling, as well as simple expressions and equations. Recently, the children have been focusing on decimal numbers. Simple steps like practising counting on and back in tenths and hundredths will help your child to consolidate this learning.

RE

This term, a whole class focus will be placed on the themes of Discipleship, the Eucharist and the Sacraments. We will also be learning more about the importance of looking after ourselves and others through personal safety and positive relationships.

Health & Wellbeing

From 14th of May onwards, the girls and boys will attend weekly swimming sessions at Wishaw Leisure Centre. As such, they should ensure that they come prepared with their swimming gear on a Tuesday morning. The class will also continue to work with Motherwell College sports coaching students on a Wednesday morning for the remainder of the term. In class and in the local community, we have also been working closely with Muirhouse Primary to explore the outdoor environment, considering the physical benefits of spending time outside.

Cross Curricular

During the final term, Primary 5 will be placing a focus on the theme of ‘Trains, Planes and Automobiles’. We will be learning more about the different ways journeys are made, in Scotland and around the world. The boys and girls well consider the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of transport, learning more about the impact of the journeys we make on the environment.

Our science focus will be on ‘The Human Body’, with the children learning more about our skeletal and digestive systems.

Again, please continue to communicate any queries or concerns using the homework diary.

Many thanks

E Burns
