Update from Mrs. McLauchlan

The children are settling in well and we have enjoyed a busy start to the first term of primary two. Our ‘Under the Sea’ topic is well underway and the children have responded positively to a variety of activities based on the topic. We are learning about ocean creatures and their habitats and the children can impress with the knowledge they have gained so far!

The children have particularly enjoyed the range of art and science activities the topic has offered. Some of the artwork includes starfish paintings, fish collages and salt dough sea creatures. Science activities have included exploring floating and sinking (the children were rather impressed by our ‘drowning’ orange task), finding out if salt water affects how an object floats and, more recently, our ‘walking water’ experiment which gave us the opportunity to see how water travels through the process of absorption. The children have also experienced a variety of writing opportunities based on our topic including writing creative stories and fact files about various sea creatures.

In maths, much of our work this term has been focused on number work, in particular, exploring the concept of number, and learning about numbers up to 100. To develop their number skills the children have been revising number stories to ten and have been introduced to number stories up to 20. Within addition we are focusing on numbers up to 20.

We hope you have enjoyed gaining an insight into some of the work carried out so far this term. Thank you for your continued support.
