Update from Miss Burns and Primary 1B

Primary 1B

Primary 1 have settled into school life and are enjoying learning lots of new things.

We have been working hard with our sounds and common words. We are beginning to recognise the words that our sounds can make when blended together using our magnetic boards.

In Numeracy have been learning numbers 0-5 and have used a variety of resources to explore the formation of these numbers including: playdough, foam and sand. We are continuing to work with these numbers and use our knowledge for counting.

Primary 1 are learning all about ‘When Gran Was a Girl’ and we have looked at some of the toys that were around at this time and have discussed which toys we prefer. We then drew a picture of a spinning top in our jotters. The children are also learning some of the games that were played including ‘In and Out Those Dusty Bluebells.’

Kind regards,

Miss Burns

Term 1 update from Miss Cochrane and Primary 1C

What an exciting term for Primary 1C. All children have settled very well into school life and are happy to follow the daily routines of the classroom and the wider school. As well as settling in, the children have also been learning lots of new things across the curriculum. Here is a little insight into what we have been up to…

In Literacy the children have been learning the first block of initial sounds and common words. We are beginning to use our initial sounds to build words and can find and read our common words in our reading books.

Within Numeracy we have been learning to read, write and use numbers 0-5. We are consolidating and challenging this learning by taking part in fun activities such as – ordering numbers on the washing line and number track, forming numbers on the smartboard, chalkboards and with playdough, and matching and sorting numbers with the unifix cubes, beads and number games.

For our interdisciplinary learning topic this term we have been learning all about the sixties and what it was like when ‘Gran was a Girl’. We have enjoyed looking at and exploring old toys and have had fun learning some playground games.

Miss Burns and Primary One – Term One Letter

Primary One are continuing to settle in well to school life and have made lots of new friends. Day by day, the boys and girls are becoming increasingly familiar and confident with the routines of the class and the wider school. We are all very excited for a fun year of learning here at St. Brendan’s.
All the children looked so smart staring Primary One and with your support we know this will continue. This term with your help we aim to ensure your child achieves their full potential in all aspects of learning.
Here is a brief overview of the learning which will be taking place in our primary one class during term one.

Literacy

Children will follow North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy programme for spelling, phonics and reading.
Primary one will be introduced to the initial sounds through a multi-sensory approach. Two sounds will be introduced each week alongside three common words. Children will be learning to recognise and write initial sounds and begin to blend sounds together and read three letter words.
We will be co-ordinating our handwriting with the sounds we are learning. Children will use whiteboards in class along with other kinaesthetic and visual materials to practise letter formation and early writing patterns, these will include playdough, shaving foam, sand and chalk boards.

Children will get two reading books each week. (Monday and Wednesday) These books give you an opportunity for you and your child to enjoy reading together. You can help your child by talking about the pictures in the book to help find clues about the story and it’s characters and also encourage them to make predictions about what may happen next in the story.

Numeracy

Primary one are currently focusing on numbers 0-10. They will be learning to recognise, count and write these numbers. Numeracy is taught actively here at St. Brendan’s through stories, games, number rhymes and songs. They will also be developing the ability to recognise, sequence and write numbers to 10, while exploring numbers before/after/between/largest/smallest. You can help at home by practising numbers to ten (counting forwards and backwards, missing numbers out when counting and asking your child to tell which number is missing etc…) and reinforcing the above vocabulary

Social Studies

Our Topics this term are ‘Our School Community’ and ‘The Sixties’. Through the topic, ‘Our School Community’ we will be learning all about the many different jobs people have within the school and how the different adults can help us. We will also be learning the important rules and routines of school life, which will help us to develop our independence and become successful in our learning. There will be lots of opportunities for active learning through role play, art, writing and stories.

Though the topic ‘The Sixties’ we will be learning about how our grans used to live. We will be exploring and learning about games, toys, clothes and food relevant to this time.

Health & Wellbeing

PE this term will be on a Wednesday afternoon and Friday Morning. The
children will be working on a ‘Mini Athletics’ programme, which will include running, jumping, throwing and catching.

R.E.

In R.E. we will be learning about the Bible and how to treat it with reverence. They will be listening to stories from the Old and New Testament as well as learning and taking part in our daily prayers.

Thank you for your support.
