Pr5 in the Stem zone!

WOW! Look at how busy we were at the stem zone last week! Mrs MacFarlane was amazed with how much fun we had and how many fabulous models we made. We started off making simpler models then as our confidence grew we began making bigger and more complicated models. We even made things that moved and turned!

What a brilliant week!

Wonderful work with P2/3

We have been working very hard in P2/3 over the last few weeks. We have enjoyed sharing our fabulous stories with each other in the class.

P2 have been working hard with the concept of multiplication and division using cubes to help them share out equally.

P2/3 have really enjoyed learning about the Ancient Egyptians in their class topic. Through co-operative learning we have used our knowledge of hieroglyphics to make different words and create groups for our learning.

Next, each group was given a different source of information to analyse and everyone worked very well with their group members to find new information about their topic.

We have also really enjoyed spending time in the library with our P5 reading buddies.

Finally, we finished off our week working hard to create our very own stained glass windows using a variety of colours and cutting the tissue paper into different shapes and sizes. I’m sure these designs will look fantastic on our class Lent display board.

Lots of fun on world book day!

P2/3 had a fantastic day celebrating world book day. They took part in lots of fun activities throughout the day.

To start off the day there was a fantastic book path all around our classroom. We had a look at all of the marvellous books and chose one to read at our table.

Next, as a whole class we discussed different ways that we could organise our the books in our library. After some great suggestions we split into groups and began to organise our set of books in different ways.

We even had our very own Book Swap. Half of the class were given a book swap token and swapped their reading book with someone else. It was great to see all the different books that everyone brought in!

After lunch we had our very own picnic as we listened to Miss Allington reading her favourite childhood book ‘The Tiger who came to tea’

We had a great time celebrating world book day and really enjoyed making our own bookmarks too!

Primary 4 Catch Up

This week was extremely busy with lots going on inside and outside the classroom! It was our turn  to visit the school’s new STEM Zone and have the opportunity to problem solve and build. Using Knex materials we built all sorts from bridges, to wheelbarrows and to whisks. Have a look at some of our creations!

We also had the pleasure and opportunity to visit Scotland Street Musem for our topic ‘The Victorians’. It was a great day from start to end where we got to see what it was like back in the Victorian school days. Our teacher who we addressed as ‘mam’ was very scary and had taught us the different ways school was taught back then. We got to use an ink well and practise our arithmetic on slate boards.

We even vent let the teacher have a break and let us take over the class. This meant we could show off what we have learned about the Victorians.

Last week we also had the opportunity to present our school projects! Have a look at some of the fantastic designs.

This was a lot of fun and it pushed our thinking skills further as we had to explain to the class how our toy works! Those who listened had to rate if we had good presentation skills such as good eye contact and slow pace of speaking. Tune in for more exciting learning in P4!

Primary 1 love books!

If you walk down our corridor, you will see the wonderful art work and written work that we have on display – this work shows what we have been learning about old and new teddy bears.

One of our class mates brought in this impressive trophy to show us – what a superstar.

This week there has been a buzz about the book fayre! We spent time on Monday looking at the lovely books and it’s clear to see what some of the favourites were!

On Monday afternoon, our reading buddies were back with us for some more paired reading  – again, we were delighted to be reading such beautiful new books.

Primary 1 are using money…and more.

We have been talking about our learning and we wanted to learn a bit more about using money and using the 5p coin. Also, we wanted to use the numicon to help us.

Talking about our learning.

Playing money bingo.

We are practicing our money skills on the ipads using Espresso Education.

We are using the numicon to work out what coins to put out to make 8p.

Also in maths, we are practicing out take away every day.

In our literacy time, we are reading trickier and trickier books and we love it!

Here we are in PE learning some gymnastics skills.

The Gift of Understanding

As part of our Pope Francis Faith Award journey, we have recently been learning about the gift of Understanding. We have been reflecting on the Scripture and on these words in particular:

“My word is like the snow and the rain that come down from the sky to water the earth.”

We have learnt that, as Jesus’s disciples, we need to seek out opportunities to let the Word of God have room in our lives. It is like fresh water that refreshes us on our faith journey. We have been reflecting on how we can do this and how we have used our gift of Understanding this week.

Magic Maths!

We have come such a long way in P6 with our maths skills. We were able to show them off recently to Mr Young when he popped along to our class to see all the super work that we’ve been doing.

We practised our rounding skills using a Tarsia Puzzle. It was really tricky but we showed excellent resilience and perseverance – most of us solved the puzzle with our partners!

Some of us practised the number skills that we have been learning over the past few weeks. We had to add and subtract 10, 100 and 1000 from a variety of 4-digit numbers. The dice game was challenging but fun…

Mr Young was very impressed!

Wonderful Wallace!

Our work continues on the Scottish Wars of Independence. Over the past couple of weeks, we have been learning about William Wallace and his crucial role in the Wars of Independence.

We have been exploring historical evidence about Wallace and we found out that, even though the Scots thought Wallace a National hero, the English at that time did not feel the same way. In fact, he was considered to be an outlaw and villain! To explore this further, in pairs, we evaluated some facts about Wallace and decided whether the evidence suggested that he was a hero or an outlaw. We had to work hard to make sure that our answers were balanced and not biased…

We then had to share our decisions with the rest of our group and reach a consensus (this is when everyone agrees with the decision) about Wallace…

Finally, we shared our group decisions with the class and again, had to reach a consensus. After adding our balanced decisions to our class ‘hero-o-meter’ we decided that Wallace did more heroic things that villainous things. It was hard not be biased but we think we did a great job!
