Sweet science in pr5!

Primary five have started a new science topic all about energy. We are looking at renewable and non renewable energy. We found out that if we keep using up all the fossil fuels there will be none left! Imagine!

So we began to investigate renewable power. We started with solar power.

When we were looking at solar power we realised that the sun can be used in two ways.

Thermal panels can take in the Suns heat to warm water and air.

Sun Light can be gathered and turned into electricity by photovoltaic cells! Wow!

We made up information posters about this and even wrote an explanation about it!

We then decided to carry out an experiment. We decided to melt chocolate in the sun!

We had a few variables to test out.

Which melts faster milk or white chocolate?

Which plate speeds up the melting? Paper or tinfoil?

Is shade or sun best?

We discussed our results. Put them into a graph and came to conclusion.

Milk chocolate melts quicker than white chocolate because the dark colour absorbs heat. Tinfoil plates warmed up quicker and melted the chocolate much sooner. The sun was warmer than the shade!

What a tasty experiment!

We wonder what will come next!

Primary 1 have had a great week.

We have been working very hard at maths time and now we can add up to 20! What superstars!

Also this week, we have been improving our thinking skills and problem solving skills by using the coding app for our class. It is great fun and some of us have earned three badges already.

In the computer room, we can all log in to Glow and try out some of the activities on our class page.

I am practicing my sentence skills.

I am practicing my common words.

I am also practicing my money skills.

At taught writing time this week, we all worked in trios to make sentences. We had to think about the three parts of a sentence and work together to come up with an interesting sentence.

On Friday, we invited our parents and carers back to school for our next Stay and Read session – it is a fabulous start to a Friday.

Here are our STAR WRITERS this week – well done everyone!

Primary 1 news

This week we explored the famous painting “Umbrellas” by Renoir. We noticed that the painting was very dark and used shades of black and blue. So then we put our ideas in action by designing our own umbrellas. This all linked into our topic on weather.
Also in primary 1 we are learning new phonemes and some of them are tricky.

We have also been learning how to split numbers and you can see that we can split numbers into tens and units.

It was our turn at the STEM zone this week. We have fun and used our thinking, creative and design skills to make some interesting models.  As part of our topic on weather this week we explored extreme weather and in particular hot sunny weather. We made leaflets to help people stay safe in the sun.  As part of our RE, we are saying the rosary each week it is a prayerful and peaceful time.

Primary 4 Catch Up

We are so excited for our special Sacrament of First Holy Communion that we will be making next Sunday. In our preparation for the Sacrament we have been working hard and had our own Holy Communion Workshop with parents. This was a huge success and we shared our learning and journey of faith. We explained to parents about The Last Supper and that the bread and wine when they are blessed and consecrated turn into the Body and Blood of Christ.

We we also had our own class Last Supper where we re enacted the Last Supper with scripture, juice and unleavened bread. We found this a fun and enjoyable experience!

We cannot wait for next week and feel very blessed to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Tune in next week to hear about our wonderful day.

A catch up in primary 5!

Wow can you believe we are well into term 4 already! Primary 5 have been enjoying lots of new learning!

In literacy we have been looking at homophones, words with the same sound but different spelling and meaning. It was quite tricky working with to/too/two where/wear/were/ your/you’re/it’s/its. We had lots of success with this and we enjoyed the challenge!

We have also enjoyed working with our buddies again.  This week we read a book and wrote a character description.  What amazing workers our buddies are!

We began designing our class mosaic this week. Mrs MacFarlane combined all of our individual designs to come up with a class motif. We can’t wait to show everyone. We organised all our class tiles for it on Friday!

Finally we have been practising our word processing skills in ICT. We are getting faster with typing and we have learned how to attach images, change font etc!

Primary 2 are learning how to play tennis!

Primary 2 had a great time in the gym hall today! We have started learning how to play tennis so we practiced passing the ball to our partner in lots of different ways. We also had to move about the hall with the tennis ball balanced on our racket, it looked really easy but we found it quite tricky! We can’t wait for next week!

A Talented Bunch

This week p4 have been showcasing their skills in lots of different areas of the curriculum! In ICT we have been investigating the Scratch App and have been learning all about coding. This was great fun and we found out that we could by using coding instruct different characters to do what we want and when. We cannot wait to try different apps and develop our coding skills further!

It’s also nearly time for our school show and we would ‘do anything’ for you to come along to watch us perform! We have been practising very hard with our songs and dance routines to songs ‘food glorious food’ and ‘I’d do anything for you’. So ‘please sir’ come along!
