Mr Young’s visit and more……

Last week we made fruit salad and when we talked about our learning with Mrs Carlin at the end of the week we asked if we could make more healthy snacks with fruit. So this week Mrs Carlin showed us a great espresso module that guided us through the process of making fruit kebabs.  One morning this week we were all given 20p to spend in the class Greengrocer shop. P.1 had all 1p coins and P.2 had a mix of coins. Mrs Ruddy came and played the part of the shopkeeper !

I counted out my money and paid Mrs Ruddy.

I chose three bags of fruit and paid the shopkeeper. I even had change!

Then we got organised to make our fruit kebabs. We worked in cooperative groups and everyone had a job to do. Here is a quick snapshot…….

I make sure I don’t touch the sharp point on the kebab stick.

I’ thinking of a pattern while I design and make my fruit kebab.

My cooperative group job is photographer so I’ ll take photos of the finished kebabs for my group.

I've washed my hands, tied my hair back and made sure my work area is clean.

We invited Mr Young to our class and he came to see how we got on making fruit kebabs.

Mr Young spent some time talking to us about creating our healthy snacks . Everyone helped each other as we worked as a cooperative team.

Also this week as part of our St Andrew’s experiences, we started to learn some Scottish Country Dancing…..it was great fun but very tiring.

Homework Projects

Mrs McLean was just super impressed by the homework projects that were handed in today. Clearly, lots of hard work and effort have gone into them and the 11 presentations were even better! The focus was on projecting voices, making eye-contact and having confident body language during the talks. The pictures speak for themselves…

Of course, we were an amazing and incredibly supportive audience too…

Here are today’s amazing projects…

Very well done boys and girls. Mrs McLean can’t wait to hear the rest of the presentations tomorrow. Watch this space!

A catch up from P5/6

Over the last couple of week primary 5/6 have been very busy. Here’s a little sample of all the things we’ve been up to.

In maths we’ve been looking at measure. Here’s a little selection of photos that show what we’ve covered so far.

We developed our skills of drawing and measuring lines to make a shape picture and challenged our partners to measure accurately.

We had to read scale to weigh different objects. We found reading the scale difficult so we used the interactive games on the smart board to help us. We also tried out hand at measuring the capacity of different shapes and sizes of containers.

Shape Problem Solving

We have been working with 3D and 2D shapes this week.

We were set a challenge of making a box for our square based pyramid. We worked in groups to figure out how to solve the problem and make the box. Then we had to present it to the class sharing the things we found easy and difficult. We identified how to improve our designs

Writing Music

We have been working as composers in music. We have worked together to write a short tune and then we were given the chance to practice it to hear what it sounded like.  We then had to perform it for the class. We found it difficult to play together so we had to practice a lot before the performance.

We are also working hard on learning our Scottish Song for our St Andrew’s Day assembly. Then its Christmas and our Christmas songs are really great.

Weather Warnings!

As part of our topic on The Water cycle the children in Primary 5 have been working in ‘Expert’ Weather Groups. They carried out research during I.C.T on different types of weather and they are going to present their findings to Mr Young next week.

Mars One Mission

This week we have been learning all about the planet Mars. We have been looking at current news items about a mission called ‘Mars One,’ which plans to send 4 humans to Mars in the year 2023!

We watched a video to find out why Mars is a place where humans might be able to live…

We took notes and added them to a group visualiser. Our note-taking skills are really improving…

We added our learning about Mars onto our PowerPoints in the ICT suite. We can add pictures, use animations, change fonts and add backgrounds to our slides…

Many people have applied to go to Mars in 2023 even though they can never, ever come back to Earth! We had a class discussion about this. We talked about what you would have to leave behind, why humans want to go to Mars and whether or not we agreed with the mission:

  • Ami said that Earth is our planet and that we should leave Mars alone because it doesn’t belong to us.
  • Jake said that we have caused lots of destruction on Earth and we will only do the same to Mars
  • Carlo said we need to explore Mars because Earth might one day be destroyed by war or disease
  • Ellie said Earth might run out of space for people so we need to explore other planets

Wow! Mrs McLean never even thought of that!

We decided to take a class survey about what item we would take with us if we were to go on a one-way trip to Mars. The options were: family; friends; a TV; a PS4 or a lifetime’s supply of sweets.

We worked as a class to create a human bar graph with scale that showed the results of our survey…

DSCN2921

Sorry family and friends but the most popular option was… sweets!

We learned that a bar graph needs a title, a horizontal axis, a vertical axis, labels and a scale. We worked in groups to create our own version of a human bar graph…

Finally, as St. Andrew’s day is fast approaching, we have been learning all about his story this week. We dramatised his story using role play…

We learned about his death on an X shaped cross and we know that we are reminded of St. Andrew every time we see a Scottish Saltire. Here are some Saltires that we made for our St. Andrew’s Day bunting…

That’s all for now. Mrs McLean is excited because tomorrow we begin delivering our homework projects on an aspect of the Solar System. Watch out for pics of our amazing work!

Talented musicians!

What a lovely treat we had this morning. Our two lovely girls came back from their trumpet lessons and agreed to play some Christmas tunes. They sounded fantastic and their music teacher Mr Woods has said they are working Just as hard and sounding just as good as high school pupils! High five girls!

Science at St Ambrose-what a blast!!!

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Primary seven had a complete blast today as we were invited up to St Ambrose for science workshops. Along with St Kevin’s primary the children of St Bartholomew’s were delighted to experiment with states of matter, acid and alkalines, electricity through fruit and chemical reactions. We all really enjoyed it and the children were delighted to see inside the school that will be their new school next year. We will work again with St Ambrose after Christmas, on more science fun! Cannot wait!!

Primary 7 have begun a new role within the school. They have decided to embark on some training to become Junior Sports Leaders. The course will consist of four days training over the next few weeks and at the end, each pupil will receive their achievement award. Pupils will be learning all about safety,  how to be a good role model, fair play and how to lead others. Their new skills will be tested out when they take infant children to play games and to do some exercise. Watch this space!…
