The clock is ticking in primary 5/6

For the last few weeks in primary 5/6, we have been looking at different aspects of time.

First we worked on our estimating skills trying to estimate how long activities would take and how many times we could complete these activities in a set amount of time.

We looked at how many times we could sneeze in  30 seconds.

Then we seen how long it would take to blink 50 times.

We investigated how many times we could touch our toes in one minute… It was exhausting!

We also used our estimating skills for some team building activities in P.E.

We got really good at estimating, so we looked at some different time-related language then practised our time-telling skills with 12 hour analogue and digital clocks.

Telling the time can be tricky business, but we worked really hard and soon we were able to move on to converting between 12 and 24 hour clocks. We played lots of different games to develop our understanding and get lots of practise!

As well as learning all about time, we’ve also been revisiting our learning from throughout the year with some maths stations and games. We’ve worked on multiplication, division, addition and subtraction in addition to place value, shape, patterns and lots of other concepts!

Lastly, we’ve been working very hard on our preparation for Confirmation. Here are a few photos of our work on the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit and how we can use them throughout this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

In maths primary 2 are learning to multiply and are getting more and more confident. Plus primary 1 are becoming adding experts too!

Our helper Daniel came from St Ambrose again this week and showed us how to make our very own small prayer beads. Everyone made one with him and then we took them to the oratory to pray.

We are also learning about Lent and what it means to make a Lenten promise. Daniel helped primary 1 to think about their Lenten promise.

Here we are making vehicles for our fantasy street- we worked in pairs and it was a challenge to make a moving vehicle!

Finally……. The best for last.

Here we have the results of our homework challenge to design a house for our street. Every day next week Mrs Carlin will post a close up of the houses until you have seen them all. For now though here is a street pre- view!image

It’s all about the Victorians!

It is indeed all about the Victorians in P4 at the moment. Here’s an update of what’s been keeping us busy…

After learning all about Queen Victoria, we’ve been busy creating some very impressive biographies using Word. We have learned how to use headings, create text boxes and copy and paste pictures into our documents…

After creating our own personalised Victorian silhouettes, we’ve been busy learning about and making Victorian style frames to display them in..

After all that hard work, here is our Victorian Gallery…

And that’s not all! We’ve been learning all about what Victorian life was like for children. We found out about different Victorian toys and explored them in our groups. Can you tell what they are..?

And finally, here is our Lenten Tree all with our Lenten promises. Each of the leaves contain a Bible reference, which we’re going to read together during each day of Lent…

Confirmation tonight

The night is finally here, our Confirmation.  Primary seven have been preparing since Christmas for this very special sacrament. We are very excited.

Today children will receive a special gift from Mrs MacFarlane, a keepsake for Confirmation.

The candle represents Jesus and the flame is representing the Holy Spirit. The heart represents the love that God has for us. The dove is another symbol of the Holy Spirit.

The children will also receive a prayer bookmark to use for their own prayer as they begin the next stage of their faith journey.

We are the Cool Class!

What a great end to a lovely week here in Primary 1/2. We were all very pleased to hear Mr Young announce that we were the cool class this week.

Here’s a quick update on our experiences this week….

In maths we Primary 1 are learning to add and subtract by counting on and back on a number line while Primary 2 are becoming very confident with their addition and subtraction skills up to 20.

We are learning to use Word when we are in the computer room. We are learning to type our own sentence then change the colour, size and font. Later we will add pictures too.

ICT

In PE we are starting a block on Hockey. We looked at a BBC Bitesize video that showed us how to hold a hockey stick, then we were able to practice our skills in the PE hall. It was tricky but we will get better with practice.

As part of our reading this term we are learning all about information books. One group have been reading all about Rock Pools. This clever girl even made her very own rock pool – WOW!

My rock pool

Through ABC music we are all becoming pretty good at keeping the beat and playing our instruments at the right time. We even had a chance to be the conductor this week!music

As it’s very cold, we are looking at weather through our drama. This session, we pretended to be Jack Frost, leaping and dancing around the room covering everything in a glittery, sparkly blanket of white. We worked on our own and in little groups. In our groups we created a Jack Frost dance that linked with the music we could hear.

P 2/3 Ancient Egyptians

Here in Primary 2/3 we are loving our new topic on the Ancient Egyptians. This week we took a closer look at Ancient Egyptian pyramids. We found out some very interesting facts about the pyramids and learned about the famous pyramids of Giza.

We then got crafty and used a template to make our own 3D model of a pyramid. We used pens, pencils, scissors and double sided tape to construct our models.

Visitors to our class were certainly left feeling very impressed!

Primary 1/2 explore “Our Street”.

As part of our topic this week, we wanted to plan a street of our own. We investigated what might be needed by the people living in our street, found out what a street plan looked like, explored different street designs then got to work!

We worked in cooperative groups, tried out a few ideas and changed our minds a few times. Each group was able to talk about their plan and explain why they had included some items and not others. We were also able to talk about why we had put certain things in certain places.

I We think the Church should be in the middle of the plan.

image

We’ve made our decisions and are now glueing everything into place.

image

We placed the park in the middle of the houses so that people can go and enjoy the park.

image

We put all of the houses and flats together. We chose different types of houses for people to live in.

We continued to explore different houses in art. Here we are completing our houses designs with water colour. Using water colour needed lots of skill and careful painting with thin brushes. We had to make sure that we used just the right amount of water to get the paint to glide on easily.image

In RE this week, we have continued to learn more about the church. We learned why we have stained glass windows in church – to remind us of the stories in the Bible. Here are the stained glass windows we made ourselves. We worked with a partner. You can see that we have also changed our altar cloth to green because it is ordinary time in the church year.

We worked hard as usual in maths and literacy…..
