Thursday 2nd April

Good morning boys and girls!

I hope you had a good day at home yesterday and are ready to learn today.

It would be a good idea to start the day with a prayer to thank God for all we have and remember to keep those who are sick in our thoughts.

There are lots of activities on the grid you can still be using. After the holidays we will up-date the website with daily tasks. In the meantime here is a morning starter to get your brains working! Try to make as many words as you can.

If there is anything at all I can do to help you or your parents at home please get in touch through twitter, email or replying to this post.

Take care everyone!

Mrs McGill

Thursday 2nd April PRIMARY 5

Good Morning Primary 5,

I hope that you are wide awake and ready to learn. Try to start your day with some exercise  and a healthy breakfast. Could you set the table and organise breakfast for your family? Write down 3 things today that you are grateful for. It can be people, things and experiences – anything!
The winner of our Sumdog Competition yesterday was EP. Very well done, your accuracy was amazing! Today, please complete a daily 10 challenge from topmark.co.uk. You might even ask a family member to compete against you.

Let’s continue exploring negative numbers using rising and falling  temperatures. Check out the clips below and work through the challenges given:

Let’s revise some silent letter words today:

wrong  climb  wrist  knot  write  comb  knock  sign  knelt  thumb  wrestle  plumber  rhythm sword  honest  debt  government  autumn  solemn  build  circuit  silhouette raspberry

Use pyramid spelling to practise words. Write a paragraph story using as many words with silent letters as you can. Circle the silent letters within words.

Read a chapter of your personal reader and tell a  family member what it was about.

Practise some of your Spanish Vocabulary as you watch episode one of Mi Vida Loca – ‘My Crazy Life.’  Jot down the key vocabulary as you watch and practise it on a family member.

Recently we studied germination and plant/ flower growth in class. Unfortunately, we were unable to conduct the experiment that we had planned. I have always wanted to grow my own vegetables, so over the coming weeks I am going to try hard to have ‘green fingers’ and grow my own vegetables from cuttings. If you are interested  in having a go watch the following clip for some ideas:

https://thekidshouldseethis.com/post/how-to-regrow-store-bought-vegetables-herbs-jag-singh

Again, please remember that you are free to select and adapt suggested activities. The most important thing is to keep yourself busy and active. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reply or email.

Have a very happy Thursday, Mrs Haughey x

P4/3 1st April

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are all up and ready to get going with whatever is planned for today!  You have your grids, study ladder, Sumdog and First News.  Don’t forget to tune in to Oti Mabuse at 11.30 for dance class, today the theme is The Greatest Showman which I know many of you love!

I have attached a recipe for salt dough, my girls and I are going to do this today.  Make the dough and then create,  when you are happy with your creation, pop it in the oven for 3-4 hours and then when its dry you can decorate.  We are doing a family handprint plaque.  I’ll post the outcome tomorrow!

Don’t forget to get outside if you can for some fresh air! It’s nice to see the sun and enjoy the outdoors.

Keep safe.

Mrs Graham 🙂

Second Level April Calendar

Hello again Primary 7,

During the month of April why not try a little bit of maths every day with a 2nd level April calendar. Go to #abitofmathseveryday on Twitter to access this calendar. It is a great way to consolidate some of the different maths concepts that we had been looking at in class. Try your best to do one every day and record the answers in the jotter that you have been given.

Mrs Butler 🙂

Wednesday 1st April- Primary 1b

Good morning Superstars🌟

Today is the first day of a new month. Can you sing our months of the year song and work out what month comes after March? What month is it?

Today I would like you to practise reading all of your common words in your word tin.  You can do this in lots of fun ways. You all love playing our common word SPLAT game in class. You could stick the words from the tin on your wall and ask a parent to call out a common word for you to READ and SPLAT. You could SPLAT it with your hand, a ball, a torch, a rolled up sock or shoot it with a nerf gun. It’s up to you! 🎯

I would also like you to continue working on the reading and spelling challenges I have set for you and take part in our class Sumdog maths competition. Lots of you have already made a great start, well done! I would be so happy if everyone could give them a try! 🏆

Now for some Bubble Fun! I have made you all a little video. I decided to make the most of the good weather yesterday and decided to make a Bubble Snake. Click on the video below to see how much fun I had.

FC0C2355-4EBB-4A55-A269-5CD1783712D2

Adults love bubbles too! Why not try making one for yourself and see how much fun you can have. It is very easy to make from things that you already have in your home.

All you need is a bottle, a sock(a clean one of course), washing up liquid, water and scissors.

Firstly ask an adult to cut the bottom off the plastic bottle using scissors. Next cover the open end of your bottle with a sock and make sure you have pulled it all the way up. Then make up your solution using water and washing up liquid. Finally dip the end of the sock into the bottle and blow the air OUT, do not suck it in.

How long can you make your bubble snake? Blowing slowly produces the longest snakes. 🐍

Remember to take pictures or videos and tweet them to St_BarbarasPS. I would love to see them🤩

Have fun and enjoy!

Miss McEleney 😀

Wednesday 1st April 2020

Good Morning Primary 3,

Hope we are all well, I am missing you all lots! Keep tweeting in your pictures so I can see those smiling faces!

Lots of you have been in touch to get your spelling words and Studyladder log in details. If you haven’t already then please get in touch. (mcmullenke@st-barbaras.n-lanark.sch.uk)

I hope you have all been busy with your learning grids. Today on Sumdog your spelling and reading challenges are ongoing. This ends at 3:00pm today when I will take a look at the results. For Maths the Studyladder challenge is still available. Choose a focus table today and try and learn it. If you do not know the answer in your head try and think about what multiplication strategies we have learned to help you get your answer.

As the weather has been so nice I thought today we could have a look outside for some signs of spring. I have uploaded a power point for you to have a look at. This will give you lots of information about spring. After you’ve had a look through there is a spring checklist. If you are in your garden or out a walk today you could use this to see how many things from the list you can spot in real life. If you can, take some photographs and tweet them for me to have a look at.

This afternoon you could maybe try some spring artwork. I have uploaded some ideas you can use but you can feel free to get creative and come up with your own spring picture.

Primary 6 – Wednesday 1st April

Good morning Primary 6,

The “Four Operations Competition” ended yesterday on Sumdog with the Genius Girls winning.

Congratulations Genius Girls!!

Here’s the answer to yesterday’s maths starter,

“I started adding work to Studyladder at twenty to four and finished at twenty past five.

How long did I spend on Studyladder in minutes?”

20 minutes until 4 + 1 hour until 5 + 25 minutes past 5 = 105 minutes

How long did I spend on Studyladder in hours? (This is trickier)

105 minutes is 1 hour and 45 minutes or 1 and three quarter hours or 1.75 hours.

Did you get it?

You can tweet your answers to any of the challenges @St_BarbarasPS and I’ll be able to see them or you can hit the “Leave a reply.” button at the top of these posts.

Here’s Cressida Cowell reading Chapter 7 of, “How to Train your Dragon.”

This is the first time that Toothless has seen Hiccup or heard him speaking dragonese. Imagine yourself in Toothless’s position, locked in a basket, taken from your cave, surrounded by humans. Write a short description in the first person (I and me) about what you are seeing, hearing, thinking and feeling. Remember when we wrote about being in the Trojan Horse and try to do something similar. Make your writing full of adjectives, adverbs and emotional content.

Lots of people did brilliantly on the 2D shape and 3D object learning pod on Studyladder yesterday! Keep up the good work, it’s great to see how much you know.

Have another look at your key spelling words for this week. Try to use as many of them as possible in one paragraph,

“The TEACHER said that it was NECESSARY to BICYCLE to the LIBRARY but, because of the LIGHTNING, I felt that this was AMBITIOUS and decided to SEPARATE myself from the WEIGHT of the bike and walk instead. He called me a VEGETABLE and so I reported him to the GOVERNMENT, for the TWELFTH time.”

Here is an interactice maths starter for today. Can you finish in less than 6 minutes?

Primary 2- Wednesday 1st April

Good morning my little primary 2’s,

It is the beginning of a new month which means one thing it’s APRIL FOOLS DAY! I hope you have a fun filled day today and don’t get up to too much mischief 🙂

Let’s keep our brains active today, starting off with revising our phoneme and common words. Why not time yourself and see how long it takes for you to read them all out loud (sh for shop, ch for chest). You could even have a go at making your own phoneme flash cards!

Remember to keep working through your learning grid, this is the last week before the Easter break so try and complete as much of it as possible.

Well done to the boys and girls who have been on Sumdog and Studyladder already, I can see lots of great learning- Keep it up!

Seeing as it’s a beautiful day, why not go out and get some fresh air. What better way to do this than by going on a spring scavenger hunt! I would love for you to tweet me pictures of what you find @St_BarbarasPS as I am missing you all.

Have a great day boys and girls, keep safe and keep smiling!

Miss Shreenan 🙂

Wednesday 1st April- Primary 7

Good morning Primary 7,

Today marks the beginning of April, try and not play too many tricks on your family members today. Unfortunately this is another year we won’t be able to get Miss McEleney back, this just gives me another year to think of something really good to get my own back.

Today test your numeracy skills with this very fun and interactive maths challenge,

https://www.sporcle.com/games/Answer/speed-math-2

Lots of our teachers have been playing this game online and been getting extremely competitive. You can play this game as many times as you like, try to beat your current score each time. I have had lots of fun trying to top my best score. Good luck!

We have been learning all about The Titanic. We had planned to do some science experiments in class that focused on buoyancy however we never got to complete them. Let’s have a look at one today to give us a better understanding of what buoyancy is.

Something to think about before you start the experiment, why does a heavy boat float while a small rock sinks? Sometimes objects sink because they’re heavy, but other times it’s because they are buoyant!

Today you are going to see what happens when you put a diet can and ordinary can in a deep container of water. Will they float or sink?

I have listed the materials needed and the step by step approach you can take to complete this experiment at home however if you do not have the necessary materials you can watch the experiment via the link below.

https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/sinking-soda-surprise/

Resources

  • Large Bucket or container
  • Water
  • Unopened diet can and unopened ordinary can (coke and diet coke for example)

Method

  1. Begin by filling a large container with water. The water should be deep enough so you can easily tell which cans are floating and sinking.
  2. Slowly place each can into the water one at a time. Make sure to tip the can on it’s side when you are placing it in the water so no air is trapped at the bottom of the can. If there is a bubble of air trapped at the bottom of the can, the results of the experiment will be impacted.
  3. Observe the cans as you place them in the water. Do they float or sink?
  4. Try to work out why the cans have reacted the way that they have.

Make predictions about what you think will happen and discuss the results with your parent or guardian. Who can remember what the scientific word is for making a prediction?

I look forward to hearing your predictions and will post the scientific explanation for this experiment tomorrow. Have fun!

Mrs Butler 🙂

Wednesday 1st April

Good morning Primary 5/4!

I hope you are having a good week. I want to say a big thank you to the boys and girls who have been emailing & tweeting us pictures. (A bigger thank you to the parents for helping them!) It is so lovely to see what you have been doing at home. It really does make all the teachers smile.

Mrs Grant and I log into Sumdog, First News and Study ladder everyday and can see who is working really hard so keep up the good work!

Today is April Fools’ Day so below is a link to some information about what different countries around the world do to celebrate.
