Early Level

In the playroom this week the children have been experimenting with writing for a purpose through creating their very own fruit and vegetable shop where they have been writing the signs, making shopping lists and sharing ideas.

Letters in the play dough have given the children the opportunity to find out what letters are in their name and are beginning to develop an understanding that letters when put together make words.

A popular addition to the playroom has been the remote control cars which has provided the children with the challenge of waiting for their turn and negotiating with one another as they make their way around the track.

Wellbeing Wednesday has been greatly welcomed with SID and SHANARRI becoming integral part of the children’s learning, many of whom have suggested that it is those stories which they want to hear more of.

Outdoor learning opportunities are always in great demand, with many of the children demonstrating their independence skills whilst getting ready by putting on their waterproof trousers, changing their shoes and finding the correct size of wellington boots…….although we don’t always have hats and gloves to suit all tastes, so maybe pop a spare set into their nursery bags.

Welcome back Elaine who has returned from her secondment supporting the roll out of the NLC Sid and Shanarri Toolkit.  Its great to have you back.

Monday 27th November 2017

Amanda is on annual leave.  Yvonne has returned from her absence.  Mhari is on training all week.

10 am/2 pm Susan and Lynn will taking a few the children from Play on Pedals on the walking route to the Bonaccord Football Park where they will be going on a weekly basis to further develop their cycling skills.

Tuesday 28th November 2017

Snr pupils from Calderhead High School will be reading with the children this morning.

10.30 am Gregor from SLT will be visiting the early level playroom.

1 pm Anne, Educational Psychologist will be visiting the early level playroom this afternoon.

1.30 pm Sasha from Childsmile will be working with the children this afternoon.

David from the local food bank will receive the donations of non perishable household items collected as part of the Nourish theme from Book Week Scotland.

2 pm Siobhan will be taking a group of children to Rosehall Care Home to share some of their favourite stories and rhymes with residents.

Rainbow Room

Developing literacy skills in the Rainbow Room

Children in the Rainbow Room have been very creative. They have been painting on a larger scale using the easel, mirrors and large pieces of paper.

Learning the rhyme “Two little Dickie Birds” has led the children to create their own nests for Peter and Paul from natural material found in the garden.

We have  introduced some percussion instruments to help the children learn about steady beats during Bookbug and singing and rhyme sessions.

On Thursday we also enjoyed another session with Jen, focusing on communication and print  as we took a walk to the co-op to buy  ingredients to make happy face pizzas at home,  matching our items to some food pictures.

Early Level

Within the early level playroom the children have been learning that being active is a healthy way to be. They have planned many outings in and around their local community. In order to get to the two local swing parks, they had to use their navigational skills to find their way which led them in part to walk past their own houses. Each child took the opportunity to lead the group, they were encouraged to use lots of directional language.  Almost all of the children knew their way to and from, with many being able to recite their address and recognise the numerals on their doors.

Together the children have been enjoying handling, tasting,  talking and learning about different foods which keep them healthy. Some children are even willing to taste some foods they have never tried before and they have now become a favourite food.  Next week they are planning to recreate their very own vegetable shop.

The children have been using a variety of  methods to share their feelings, creating their own representations, through stories and games which has encouraged lots of discussion. Many of the  children are beginning to express how they are feeling and identify how others are feeling with the use of emotional literacy.

Through play the children have been exploring interesting materials for writing and are beginning to use mark making for a purpose.

Kodaly and ABC programmes continue to be delivered within the sessions where children are learning to listen and participate actively following instructions in response to rhymes and songs.

Today is the day that we need your help, all the presents are now in and are awaiting to be wrapped, thanks for those parents and carers who have volunteered their time. We will ensure that the kettle is on and there are plenty of biscuits to go round.

A huge thank you to all the parents and carer’s who are continuing to attend our Family Learning Sessions. You supported us to bring a fantastic book to life “Dear Zoo”  for your little ones, by helping them choose the prop to match the narrative and provided the accompanying sounds! You then helped the children extend their learning by finding the various animals out in garden. While adding to their vocabulary and emergent literacy skills with descriptions of where to look for each animal.

The Shotts Area Transition Group will meet this afternoon to begin to plan for the Community Transition to School Event, Siobhan will be attending this group

Colleagues from Forgewood Family Learning Centre along with colleagues from speech and language services will be in the nursery this afternoon at 2.30 pm
