Our Book Week Celebrations Have Begun

Book Week Scotland has got off to a flying start in the nursery!  The children responded very well to the staff and pupils of Dykehead Primary School, quickly forming relationships and listening attentively to the stories they had brought with them.

Whilst others participated in Story Yoga, learning new movements to go alongside the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ before finishing off with a massage to the rhyme ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

Thanks to some of our parents we were able to have an outing to the local library where a group of children got to borrow a book of their choice, please speak to your child’s key worker if you would also like to join us in our celebrations!

The shelves in our Book Swap Shop are filling up, so if any of your family have any old books they would like to trade in please bring them along and you can exchange them for  a new exciting read.

Week 8 of our collaboration with CCI & Calderhead High School

The children have been  very busy this week with Shirls collecting lots of foliage for the large Guardian of the Forest. They were introduced to a special cutting tool called loppers which we safely used to cut some of the larger pieces. Shirls encouraged the children to use their creativity skills to decide which pieces they would use for the eyebrows, beard and hair. At the end of the session,  Susan built a small fire to keep the children warm up then they used it to brown their bread to make toast.

We are looking forward to the big reveal with our families on Thursday 1st December.dsc06067 dsc06066 dsc06067 dsc06064 dsc06060 dsc06057 dsc06055 dsc06054 dsc06053 dsc06049 dsc06048 dsc06047 dsc06044 dsc06043 dsc06042 dsc06040 dsc06039 dsc06036 dsc06034 dsc06032 dsc06030 dsc06029 dsc06028 dsc06027 dsc06027 dsc06026 dsc06025 dsc06024 dsc06022 dsc06020 dsc06019 dsc06018 dsc06017 dsc06015 dsc06014 dsc06013

The Rainbow Room

The new children have all settled well within the Rainbow Room and are beginning to build positive relationships with their peers. They have been having lots of fun both indoors and outdoors learning how to wait their turn as they explore the changes in weather. Lots of water play, splashing in puddles, jumping in the snow, and listening to the many sounds within the natural environment.

Early Level

The children within the Early Level playroom continue to learn about people who help us and the role they have in doing so. Recent visits from the Fire Brigade, School Crossing Patrol and discussions about Soldiers have sparked excitement among the children, who have been using books and costumes to take on the role of these important people in our community. Through the use of interactive games using the Smartboard and musical instruments, the children have been learning how to use numbers in sequence during play, with a marching band having recently been established!

Purves Puppets

Would you and you child or a responsible family member like to attend a performance at Purves Puppets in Biggar, the proposed dates would be on or around the 29th and 30th of November?

The cost of the performance would be £6 per person with the cost of the coaches being paid for from the recent fundraising event, or alternatively you can use your own transport.

Due to the timings of the shows it would mean that there would be no normal sessions on offer on these dates.

The times for each show would be 10.30 am for morning children and 12.30 pm for afternoon children

Further information will be available this week

Developing an understanding of people and places in the local community

The children in the early level playroom are learning who and what there is in their local community who can help them.  They have written to Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, Strathclyde Fire Brigade and the Army to invite key personnel to visit them.

Do you or any of your family members work in these professions and would like to visit the children in the nursery to talk about your role?

A group of learners have been demonstrating their understanding of environmental print, by pointing out their address and signs in their local community as they plan their journey safely around Shotts.

On Friday 11th November the children will be having a visit from the Shotts Fire and Rescue crew with their fire engine, we have no doubt that there will be lots of excited children in the nursery.

Early observations have demonstrated that Friday’s Minin Movers with Rebecca from NLLeisure was a huge success. The children were learning how to use a steady count to 8 as they moved their bodies in time to the musical track from Jungle Book, Bear Necessities.  This programme will help to develop the children’s attention and listening skills, their use of early number and above all their health and wellbeing as they develop their movement skills.
