Literacy

Children engage in daily literacy lessons which include reading, writing, talking and listening.  We follow Read, Write, Inc. programme in P1-3 and Active Literacy in P4- P7.

Phonics

Children have a daily 20 minute speed sound lesson where they learn the sounds each letter and combination of letters make and then blend them to read and spell words. We use Fred the frog to help teach phonics. More information on our Read, Write, Inc. phonics programme can be found here.

Reading

Children read books at an appropriate level and then complete tasks to ensure understanding.

In the upper school, children use 6 different strategies to allow them to analyse the text: metalinguistics, visualisation, prior knowledge, main ideas, inference and summary.

Writing

Children are given many opportunities to write throughout the curriculum.  They also take part in a weekly taught writing lesson which focuses on a particular genre; e.g. instructions, narrative, etc.

Children also undertake weekly spelling and grammar activities.
