Children engage in daily literacy lessons which include reading, writing, talking and listening.  We follow North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy program.

Children read books at an appropriate level and then complete tasks to ensure understanding.

In the upper school, children use 6 different strategies to allow them to analyse the text: metalinguistics, visualisation, prior knowledge, main ideas, inference and summary.

Children are given many opportunities to write throughout the curriculum.  They also take part in a weekly taught writing lesson which focuses on a particular genre; e.g. instructions, narrative, etc.

Children also undertake weekly spelling and grammar activities.
