Rainbow Learning – Week Seven…

Over the past few weeks we have focused on rainbows and the feelings of hope they have brought to everyone. We have looked at the colours red & yellow. This week it’s the colour pink. How does this colour make you feel and why?

For many, it makes them think about things they love.

As we approach the end of a very different school year, you might want to take some time to think about what you love about our school..

You could share this with your parents or siblings. You could even share it amongst our class on Teams or with me privately. _________________________________________________________________

Please read this poem, “The Magic Box” by Kit Wright – www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zd9bwmn.

How would you capture the magical things about our school to put in a magic box.

You can be as inventive as possible in expressing your ideas.

It might be through a video clip, a drawing or painting, music or a piece of writing. We could maybe collate these messages into one book or film to create our class magic box to help remember these special things. _________________________________________________________________

  • Learn about the wonders of the oceans and what they do for us.
  • Explore the famous ocean explorers.
  • Explore marine life here in the UK

Before you race off to look at the resources – here is a little video to remind us of how important it is to stop and take a breath…

Remember to send me anything you learn or do during World Ocean Day!

North Lanarkshire’s Sumdog contest started on Friday 5th and will run until Thursday 11th.

All you need to do is login and play to contribute towards our school’s place on the leaderboard! We need 10 players to qualify for the competition, right now 4 of you have played, so please try to get online!

As a reward for taking part in the competition, students who answer 100 questions will also receive an item for their Sumdog House! I will also receive a special report showing how hard you have worked during the contest – this may mean that I also reward coins!

I will also continue to reward those, who at the end of the week, have spent the most time online and those who score the highest…

Writing Lesson – Character Description…

Your writing task this week is to write a description of your favourite character from a book, film or TV show (make sure your character is appropriate for school).

Choose a character you know a lot about and that you feel you would be able to write a detailed description about.

  • Complete the table first. Add in as many adjectives you can to describe the character’s appearance and personality, try to include interesting and more complex words to engage the reader. Think about their size, shape, hair and eye colour, strength, clothing, skin colour etc. For their personality think about how they behave, how they act and treat people and explain the words you have chosen give reasons to evaluate their personality.
  • Then, take some notes about the character’s background, who they are, family and friends, what is their role within the book, film, TV series, likes and dislikes.
  • Next, write your description of your character including a variety of interesting adjectives to describe their appearance and their personality make sure the reader is able to build a clear picture of them in their minds. When writing about the character’s personality evaluate and explain the adjectives you have chosen, why would you describe them as this (an example has been shown below). In the introduction explain who the character is and a little bit of background about who they are.
  • When you have finished your writing, read over what you have read making any changes you may need to. Then using the success criteria, assess what you have written. 2 things you have done well and 1 thing that you think you can improve on next time – just same way as you would in school.

Character Description Writing (First Level) – Primary 4s

Character Description Writing (Second Level) – Primary 5s

I didn’t write the one about Hermione Granger that is included – but funnily enough it would have been the character I would have chosen!

I look forward to reading your character descriptions!

Spelling – Suffixes – WB. 8/6…

For spelling this week, I would like you to spend time reading & spelling suffix words…

A suffix is a letter or group of letters that goes on the end of a word and changes the word’s meaning – for example: care + ful = careful.

Sometimes they also change the original words spelling – for example: drop + ed = dropped.

Use these posters to remind you of the suffix rules…

Suffix Rules

You can also recap/learn more about suffixes at this BBC Bitesize link or these series of lessons from BBC Teach

Then practise the suffix words below using these new spelling activities…

Suffix-Word-List

Spelling-Activities-Menu

You could also search for some suffix quizzes on Kahoot! for a further challenge…
