Bank Manager Visit

Primary Five/Four have been learning about money and finance over the past two weeks. This morning they were very lucky and received a visit from Bank of Scotland Branch Manager, Carole Anderson.

The children thoroughly enjoyed her visit and asked lots of interesting questions to build on their knowledge. They learned about budgeting, different accounts offered in a bank, jobs within a bank, counting money and keeping money safe. They also got to handle large note denominations which I think was their favourite part!

Amazonia

Today, Primary Five/Four went to Amazonia at Strathclyde Park to build on their knowledge of rainforests. They thoroughly enjoyed all of the interactive learning experiences; including handling animals of the rainforest!

Butterfly Release

002 (2) 005 (2) 006 (2) 007 (2) 009 (2) 010 (2)

On Monday afternoon, Primary Five/Four released their five butterflies in the playground. They chose a perfect spot with bright flowers. The butterflies were so happy with their new home that some were still there the next day!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the lifecycle of a butterfly ‘in action’ over the past few weeks. Here are some of their thoughts on the experience:

Zara – I enjoyed having the caterpillars in the classroom and it was nice to set them free as butterflies.

Emma M. – I enjoyed pointing out to Miss Gibb how they had changed each day.

Grace – I enjoyed setting the butterflies free, even though, they were still in the same spot when we came into school the next day.

Isla – It was amazing how the tiny caterpillars we got grew into beautiful butterflies.

Lauren – It was a great experience to find out we had baby caterpillars in our classroom.

Jay – It was magnificent seeing them go into their chrysalis and then come out as butterflies.

Emma T – It was great having them in our class and I was sad to let them go.

Craig – It was fantastic seeing one tiny caterpillar grow into a massive butterfly.

Jennifer – I enjoyed having the caterpillars in our class. I like how they transform into beautiful butterflies.

Ziad – It is amazing how they go into a chrysalis and come out as a butterfly.

Marie – It was amazing how the caterpillars turned into butterflies.

Morgan – I enjoyed watching the caterpillars life cycle and we were lucky enough to see one come out of it’s chrysalis.

Jodi – It was amazing how the caterpillar makes the chrysalis and changes form from a caterpillar to a butterfly.

Chloe – I enjoyed watching the caterpillars turn into butterflies. It’s amazing how they change in their chrysalis.

Jake -It was amazing having caterpillars in our class.

Butterflies!

What an exciting week in Primary Five/Four… three out of five butterflies have now emerged from their chrysalis!

The first emerged on Wednesday during lunchtime so it was a huge surprise when the children came in from the playground. Another two emerged yesterday.

The children are thoroughly enjoying watching the butterflies explore their butterfly garden.

Pop-up Books

P7/6 are gainfully employed creating pop-up books this term.  They have been learning about Lanarkshire and the Clyde Valley and specifically about landmarks in the area.  They have been doing a lot of research. They also learned how to make 6 different types of ‘folds’ to incorporate into their books – box fold, mouth fold, paper spring pop-up, lift-the-flap-pop-up, slider pop-up and rotating pop-up. The context for their pop-up books is that a ‘visitor’ has come to Scotland. They have to take their ‘character’ on a tour of Scotland visiting different landmarks, at least one of which must be in Lanarkshire!

They have organised themselves into ‘working’ groups, each of which must devise a storyboard outlining the landmarks to be used (more research), storyline, illustrations etc.  But while doing this they are required to work cooperatively!! They need to think about talents of individual children, pool ideas, learn to compromise, allocate jobs, accept feedback, choose materials, etc. Not an easy task but one which will ensure children become successful, responsible, effective and confident!

By the end of term it is hoped that these pop-up books will be ready with a cover and blurb to read to the other classes in the school.  Until then we are going to have some noisy and busy afternoons in class.

You will be glad this is a still snapshot and not a video – noise level greatly reduced!!!

Caterpillar Progress!

We now only have one caterpillar left! The rest have gone into their chrysalis ready for metamorphosis to take place. Very exciting! We are hoping the last caterpillar will have formed it’s chrysalis by the end of today and we can transfer the chrysalis’ into our butterfly garden tomorrow in preparation for them emerging as beautiful butterflies!

Here are some photos of the progress made last week:

Health and Eco club

The members of both the Health and Eco committees worked together after school today to get the new benches varnished, plant pots painted and our garden shed tidied out. Great work everyone! Well done.

Rainforest Layers

Primary five/four have been learning about the different layers (strata) of the rainforest. They worked collaboratively to create 3D models, using a selection of materials, which clearly show the four different layers; the forest floor, the understory, the canopy and the emergent.

Here are some photos from start to finish!
