Primary 4/3 Breakfast Club

Some children from Primary 4/3 had their breakfast in school today as part of our school ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’ events. The children (and teacher!) enjoyed some toast, a banana and some fresh orange juice. Everyone enjoyed their delicious breakfast and want to thank the Health and Eco Committees, Miss Gibb and Miss Potts for organising this event. This is what some of the children in Primary 4/3 had to say.

Connor C – “I really liked the toast because it had loads of butter on it.”

Ethan – “I had two breakfasts today – it was great!

Ellie – “I enjoy being a member of the Health Committee because I can help out at breakfast club.”

Freya – “I liked having breakfast with my friends this morning.”

Playground Benches

015

Our brand new playground benches arrived today. We are absolutely delighted with them. The children will be able to use the benches once they have been positioned and secured to the ground.

The children are really looking forward to enjoying their packed lunches in the sunshine (hopefully we’ll have some before June!) and are excited about the prospect of having ‘an outdoor classroom’ where they can work and learn.

The purchase of benches would not have been possible without the kind donation of £500 from the Parent Council and the free labour/delivery organised by Jim Dowd and Mick Buck of HMS Barlinnie Prison. Special thanks to all of them.

Miss Gibb.

Scotland Street WWII Classroom

Today, March 3rd 2015, the pupils of Primary 6 and Primary 7 visited Scotland Street Museum to experience life as a WWII pupil – and what an experience it was!!  Dressed appropriately the children sat in rows, in silence, with feet flat on the floor and arms folded.  Miss James, the WWII teacher, took the children through their ‘paces’.  There were a lot of worried faces as work began but the children soon got to grips with slates and slate pencils for their mental arithmetic.  Pens, ink and blotting paper were used for the spelling exercise.  These were not easy to use and many children have ‘inky’ hands to prove it but fortunately the ‘belt’ stayed safely on the teacher’s desk!  They completed labels to be worn in case of evacuation and learned exactly what they had to do with their gas masks.  Eventually when the bell rang they were transported back to 2015 with a sigh of relief!!  All that was left was a spot of ‘drill’ with the janitor, Mr James!

The children all thoroughly enjoyed the session but didn’t want their class teacher to take lessons from Miss James!!  Perhaps life in an Overtown Primary classroom is not too bad after all!!

Giant Tetrahedron

Today, Friday 27th February Primary 7 had a visit from Linda Jane (CITB) and Debbie (Graham Construction).  They came along to talk to the children about the construction industry and to build a large structure in our gym hall!!  The children were involved in a discussion about the different types of structures constructed, different materials used and different trades involved.  They also talked at length about Health and Safety and conducted a Risk Assessment.  Construction began in a small way but evolved into a Giant Tetrahedron.  The children worked extremely hard and a high standard of team work was evident.  They were justifiably proud of the final outcome!! The children made these comments

  • It was a very fun and active experience even though it wasn’t a proper lesson, we still learned quite a lot of new things! – Matthew
  • It was a great experience and a fun way to incorporate teamwork and maths – Chloe
  • I really enjoyed doing this task and learned a lot like how to be safe and work as a team – Alex
  • It was awesome, I loved it! – Callum
  • I loved it, nothing else needs to be said! – Ethan
  • It was a great experience that I’ll remember for a long time! – Hayley
  • One word, outstanding – Haris
  • I thought that building this giant tetrahedron was fantastic and the end results were excellent – Millie

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT!

Fairtrade Fortnight was kicked off last Friday with an assembly taken by the Health and Eco Committees. They explained the meaning of Fairtrade and gave their peers an insight into how Fairtrade products came about. They did an excellent job of getting the Fairtrade message across.  Well done to those involved!

David Livingstone Topic

006001

Our David Livingstone topic wall is becoming very busy with all the information we have learned so far. Below are comments from the children about some of their learning:

Timeline of Events

Emma T: We learned about the important events in David Livingstone’s life and then made a timeline for our wall display to show these events. I learned that David Livingstone’s wife died in 1862.

Morgan: I enjoyed working with Jay to design a flap for our timeline. We learned that in 1871 Henry Stanley was sent to find David Livingstone in Africa.

Ziad: I enjoyed designing the ‘1858’ flap for our timeline. This was the year that David Livingstone returned to Africa to work for the British Government to explore Africa further.

David Livingstone and Africa Collage

Craig: “We made a collage of David Livingstone. First we traced the outline then we all had a chance to decorate it. To decorate it we used paint, string and scrunched paper. We had so much fun.”

Lauren added: “We used different materials such as black and green paint, black tissue paper and green pieces of string. The design took a lot of work by me and the rest of the class. I hope the rest of the class loved doing the collage because I certainly did.”

Karen: “One of the first things that we made was the David Livingstone Collage. Everyone got to do a bit and in the end it looked amazing.”

Ziad: “p5/4 managed to make a beautiful collage of David Livingstone with Africa behind him. We used paint, tissue paper and string. All the class did a bit of him and it was real fun.”

David Livingstone’s Family Tree

Jake: “We learned about David Livingstone’s family tree.”

Morgan: “We have been learning about David Livingstone’s family and made a family tree. I really enjoy this topic and it is really fun but I can’t wait for our next topic, The Rainforest!”

Disease in the Victorian Times

Thomas: “I learned that diseases were easily spread when David Livingstone was a child. This happened because the full family lived in one room and the water they drank wasn’t as clean as it is now.”

 The Zambezi Expedition

Karen: “David Livingstone was part of a team who’s challenge was to try and find the source of the Zambezi River. I learned that on board Ma Robert with David Livingstone was his brother Charles Livingstone, George Rae, Thomas Baines, John Kirk, The Makololo tribe, Norman Bedingfield and Richard Thornton.  Each had an important job to do on the boat.”

Emma T: “I learned about the important jobs each man did on board Ma Robert.

David Livingstone – leader

Thomas Baines – Artist and store keeper

John Kirk – Doctor

Makololo Tribe – guides, porters and translators

Norman Bedingfield – Naval officer

Richard Thornton – Geologist

George Rae – Engineer

Charles Livingstone – Photographer”

The Sair Finger!

Primary 6/5 worked really hard to learn their Scottish poem ‘The Sair Finger’, by Walter Wingate and were all very brave to stand up in front of the class to read it. It was extremely difficult to choose a winner!  Our winners Claire and Ben then had to recite their poem to the whole school at our Burns assembly.

They did a marvellous job!

Active Spelling

Isla brought coloured chalk into school today so we decided to head outside for our Active Spelling and do pyramid spelling in the playground. Great fun!

Scottish Poetry Competition (P5/4)

Scottish Poetry Competition Scottish Poetry Competition Scottish Poetry Competition

The children in Primary Five/Four all made an excellent effort to learn the Scottish poem “A dug, a dug”, by Bill Keys for the in-school competition. On Friday the 13th of February, they all rose to the challenge of performing the poem in front of an audience. They all did extremely well and made it very difficult to choose a winner from each stage! I would like to say a huge well done to the children (and parents) for putting so much time and effort into learning the poem and their actions to go along with it. I’m sure they will have convinced their household that they NEED a dog.

Please see the photos of our winners in action. This afternoon the girls performed to an even bigger audience at the school assembly and did our class very proud. Well done girls!

Miss Gibb.

Hopscotch Theatre – ‘The Last Supper’

This afternoon P4-7 were lucky enough to be the audience for Hopscotch Theatre’s production ‘The Last Supper’ which was all about the life of Robert Burns.  It was an excellent performance by the two actors and the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed it.  Children were invited to participate as characters and by singing or reciting the poems along with the actors.  At the end there was a question and answer session and as usual our pupils did not hold back and showed how engaged they had been by the quality of questions asked or comments made.  A super afternoon for all!!
